AFIT to commence degree programmes in Aircraft Maintenance; On November 27, 2023, the leadership at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) received exciting news as Air Vice Marshal Sani Labaran Rabe, the Commandant, unveiled plans for the institute to initiate a degree program in Aircraft Maintenance.

AVM Rabe made this significant announcement during a collaborative meeting with representatives from the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) at AFIT. CATIC, a Chinese state-owned defense company specializing in aviation technology, visited AFIT to explore potential areas of collaboration. AVM Rabe outlined AFIT’s intentions to establish the necessary infrastructure, fully equipped by the start of the upcoming academic session in September 2024.

Emphasizing AFIT’s suitability for a staff exchange program, AVM Rabe highlighted the importance of assessing the quality of aircraft and mechatronic equipment in China to ensure alignment with the institute’s requirements.

Additionally, the leader of the Chinese delegation, Mr. Lioa Xun, expressed the objective of evaluating AFIT’s facilities to establish a vocational technical center aimed at advancing aircraft maintenance capabilities for both Nigeria and China.

The visiting Chinese team included Professor Ma Chao and Professor Wang Cheng Hao from Chendu Aeronautic Polytechnic, recognized as China’s premier institution for aircraft research. This visit provided an opportunity for both parties to review their respective course curricula, seeking potential areas for collaboration and the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Notably, AFIT stands as the sole accredited institution in Nigeria authorized to offer degrees under the National Universities Commission and diplomas under the National Board for Technical Education.

Key members of the Commandant’s team present during the visit included the Deputy Commandant, AVM AO Shoghanmu; Provost, Professor Mahmoud Dauda; Registrar, Air Cdre MS Lawal; Dean of the Centre for Technical and Vocational Training, Gp Capt OG Alabi; Liaison Officer, Gp Capt MH Akpan; and Director of Administration, Gp Capt JG Mudutgap. Representing CATIC were Zhao Lue, Luo Xiao, and Mr. Wu Si. This meeting marked a pivotal step toward potential collaborations and advancements in aircraft maintenance between AFIT and CATIC, fostering mutual development in aviation technology.
