AHRI/UCL PhD Studentship 2024/2025 – Call For Applications; This prestigious opportunity offers up to three potential candidates the chance to enroll in a PhD program at UCL while conducting their research project at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI). Funded by UCL’s Division of Infection and Immunity, this award is specifically open to applicants who are permanent residents of South Africa.

The AHRI/UCL PhD Studentship covers tuition fees and living expenses for candidates pursuing a PhD at UCL.

Application Deadline: April 12, 2024

Eligible Fields: The proposed PhD research must focus on medical sciences and/or population health, encompassing research from molecular levels to whole organisms and human populations aimed at improving global health and well-being.

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Be domiciled in South Africa at the time of application
  • Have completed or be close to completing a Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Possess a letter of recommendation from a proposed supervisor at UCL
  • Either work with AHRI already or hold an approved letter of support to pursue a PhD at AHRI
  • Be willing to spend up to one year in London during their PhD studies (which can be split into two periods if necessary)

Application Process: Applicants are assessed based on academic achievements, research experience, quality of the supervisory team, and the strength of the proposed project. Shortlisted candidates will undergo a formal interview with the selection panel. Women applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

Award Benefits:

  • Full funding for a three-year doctorate at UCL
  • Two round-trip economy airfares between South Africa and the UK (per award)
  • Support for reasonable living costs in London for up to one year
  • UCL bench fees
  • Support for living costs in Durban for two years

Duration of Award: 3 years
