Canada eliminates work-hour restrictions for international students; This is fantastic news for internal students throughout the country! The Canadian government recently lifted work-hour restrictions for international students, allowing them to work as much as they want while studying in Canada. This is a huge win for students who want to gain valuable work experience while studying.
To address acute labor shortages in Canada, the Canadian government is temporarily lifting the limit on the number of hours per week that international students can work off-campus. During the academic term, international students are typically permitted to work no more than 20 hours per week off-campus. But now, from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023. International students who have off-campus permission on their work permit will not be limited to 20 hours per week.
The new rule applies not only to international students currently studying in Canada, but also to students who have applied for a study permit as of October 7, 2022. (provided, of course, that their application is approved).
According to the government, the temporary lifting of the work cap will affect “more than 500,000 international students already in Canada who are potentially available to work additional hours,” not to mention those who will come to the country on an approved study permit applied for before the 7 October deadline. Students must balance their academic coursework with off-campus work. They will not be allowed to reduce their course loads or go part-time. If they do, they will be ineligible for off-campus employment.
This is fantastic news for international students looking for work and opportunities to improve their English skills. The government should make sure students are aware of these changes and how they can benefit from them.
