Eligible Countries: All African countries except Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia (applicants from these countries can apply under the Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood).

About Coimbra Group Short-Term Scholarships:

Coimbra Group universities provide short-term visits (usually 1 to 3 months) to young African researchers from higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The aim is to facilitate research engagement and establish academic and research contacts. Financial support is provided by participating universities, while administrative management is handled by the Coimbra Group Office.

Type: Research, Short course

Eligibility: Applicants must:

  • Be born on or after January 1st, 1979
  • Be nationals of and current residents in a country in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Be current staff members of a university or equivalent higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Be doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status; some universities offer grants for Master’s level students
  • Female candidates are encouraged and prioritized.

Selection Process: The Coimbra Group Office conducts an administrative check to select eligible candidates, after which the host universities make the final selection. Successful candidates will receive a letter of invitation from the host university. The Coimbra Group Office notifies all applicants of the outcome.

Number of Awardees: Limited

Value: Successful candidates receive financial support for tuition, living costs, airfares, etc., and access to excellent academic resources and facilities.

Duration: 1 to 3 months, with dates agreed upon between the candidate and the academic supervisor at the Coimbra Group University.
