Anambra Government Awards Sports Equipment to Outstanding Schools in Anambra School Sports Festival

Schools excelling in the Anambra School Sports Festival receive sports equipment from the Anambra government.

In recognition of their remarkable achievements at the Anambra School Sports Festival held between May and June this year, the Anambra state government has generously donated sports equipment to several schools.

Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), accompanied by members of the commission, officially handed over the sports equipment to the deserving schools.

As part of their earlier recognition and rewards program, the ASSDC had presented prize money, ranging from N1.5 million to N500,000, to the top three winners. Additionally, over N500,000 in rewards were distributed to individuals who received special awards during the inaugural Anambra Sports Solution Initiative.

The sports equipment comprises a volleyball court, an Olympic-standard table tennis board, footballs, volleyballs, and basketballs. Washington Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha, which excelled in volleyball, witnessed the expansion and renovation of their dilapidated volleyball court.

St. Anthony’s Catholic Comprehensive Institute in Agulu, located in Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA), received a brand-new Joola Table Tennis board to acknowledge their exceptional performance in the table tennis event during the festival. Furthermore, they were presented with ASSDC-branded volleyball and basketball equipment.

Rosa Mystica, also in Agulu within Anaocha LGA, was rewarded with three ASSDC-branded footballs, two volleyballs, and one basketball.

Chairman Onyedum expressed that this generous gesture fulfills the commission’s commitment to support schools that excelled at the sports festival with sports equipment and facilities. He underscored the importance of nurturing sports at the grassroots level, emphasizing that the reintroduction of school sports has yielded positive results. This was evident in the performance of the Anambra team at the recently concluded National Youth Games in Asaba.

Mr. Onyedum encouraged schools to take their inter-house sports competitions seriously, noting that this would prepare them for the 2024 state school sports festival. He also urged the schools to make the most of the provided sports equipment.

The Anambra government’s commitment to promoting sports excellence and fostering talent development among the youth remains unwavering.
