Court Orders Yahaya Bello’s Remand Till December 10

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to detain Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, until December 10.

Presiding over the case on Wednesday, Justice Maryanne Anenih ruled that Bello would remain in EFCC custody until his bail application hearing, scheduled for the mentioned date.

Bello, alongside his co-defendants, Shuabu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge brought against them by the EFCC. The charges allege fraudulent activities amounting to N110.4 billion.

Courtroom Disruption
During the arraignment, supporters of the former governor caused a commotion in the courtroom, leading Justice Anenih to temporarily step out. In response, Bello personally addressed his supporters, urging them to maintain order so the proceedings could continue.

Upon her return, the defense counsel, Bello Daudu (SAN), appealed for the court to grant his client bail. Daudu emphasized that Bello’s presence in court demonstrated his willingness to cooperate with the legal process. He also requested that the case be treated separately from an earlier trial involving Bello at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, Justice Anenih declined the request and maintained that the bail hearing would hold on December 10.

Background on the Case
This legal battle follows a series of controversial events between Bello and the EFCC. In September, an attempt by the agency to arrest Bello at the Kogi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja was met with resistance, with security operatives allegedly firing gunshots.

On September 18, Bello accused the EFCC of neglecting him when he voluntarily appeared at their headquarters. The agency refuted the claim, asserting that Bello failed to follow due procedures. The situation escalated later that day when a confrontation broke out between EFCC officials and security agents at the Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro District of Abuja.

The EFCC has since accused Bello of attempting to mislead the public, maintaining that he had not formally presented himself to the agency as required.
