Dbanj arrested for alleged N-Power fraud worth over N100m

Singer Oladapo Oyebanji, aka Dbanj, has been detained by the independent corrupt practices and other related offences commission, according to PremiumTimes.

He was forced to surrender himself at the agency’s Abuja headquarters on Tuesday as ICPC agents closed in on him. He was then apprehended and detained.

According to PremiumTimes, Dbanj had been evading summonses for weeks by stating that he was abroad for scheduled concerts each time he was asked to show up for an interrogation over fraud claims.

He is accused of defrauding the Nigerian government of hundreds of millions of naira intended for N-Power projects, an empowerment initiative launched in 2016 to combat youth unemployment and advance social development.

Investigators claim that Dbanj conspired with some corrupt government officials to add fictitious beneficiaries to the scheme’s payroll. Then, the recipients get payments into accounts that are now purportedly connected to the pop star.

The musician was forced to appear at the commission’s office on Tuesday after the ICPC sought to arrest him anywhere in Nigeria and overseas after he repeatedly declined invitations to appear for questioning. Dbanj was detained after a protracted interrogation that took place right away after his arrival. Officials rejected the musician’s request for administrative bail because they believed that he could not be trusted to appear at his trial after being granted bail.
