The Federal Government has expressed concern over the decision by the governors of Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi to shut down schools for Ramadan. According to the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, there is no religious basis for this practice.
In Saudi Arabia—a nation recognized for its strong Islamic values—schools remain open and classes continue as usual throughout the holy month. So why are states here in Nigeria taking a different approach?
With Bauchi (54%), Kebbi (45%), Katsina (38%), and Kano (35%) already having some of the highest rates of out-of-school children in the country, shutting down schools during Ramadan only worsens the situation.
Education should not be put on hold, especially when it’s not required by faith. Let’s rethink this and ensure that our children don’t miss out on valuable learning time!
