Former UNN Student and Friend Arrested by Police Over Romance Scam in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has apprehended two suspects on charges of criminal conspiracy, identity theft, and romance scams in Abuja. This arrest was made in accordance with the directives of Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to safeguard a secure cyber space for Nigerians.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the suspects, residents of Panasonic Estate in Idu, Abuja, have confessed to being involved in computer-related frauds, particularly romance scams and identity theft. Substantial evidence retrieved from their electronic devices has illuminated the extent of their criminal activities.

One of the suspects, a former student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), claimed to have been a part of the music industry since 2016 and also runs a public relations company. He has admitted to engaging in fraudulent activities since 2014 through Facebook. The investigation has uncovered compelling evidence linking him to fraud and romance scams up to the present day.

The second suspect, closely associated with the first, was arrested during the operation. While he initially claimed his visit to the first suspect’s residence was for music recording purposes, he confessed to having a unique connection with a 69-year-old white woman named Winnie, whom he identified as both a fan and a friend. Evidence of a series of cash exchanges between the second suspect and Winnie has surfaced.

ACP Adejobi reiterated the Nigeria Police’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of citizens by actively cracking down on criminal activities. He urged the public to exercise vigilance and caution when interacting with individuals online, especially those they have not met in person.
