Hoodlums set church ablaze in Ond

Unknown assailants have set fire to the Motailatu Church of God, located in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, in the Oke-Idahun Parish.

The arsonists broke into the church and set fire to its belongings.

The church, which belongs to the Cherubim and Seraphim sect, is situated on Imafon Road in the state’s Akure North Local Government Area.

When he arrived on the church grounds on Friday evening, according to the church’s resident minister, Very Rev. David Akinadewo-Adekahunsi, he noticed the arsonists’ footprints.

He admitted that the broken lectern on the altar and some broken bottles scattered throughout the church auditorium were what initially drew his eye.

The priest, who is a prominent journalist in Ondo State, claimed that numerous plastic church chairs and offering trays had been burned in the church chancel.

Adekahunsi bemoaned that the “malicious destruction” done to the House of Prayer did not also spare the church hymn books and other objects held in a room in the incomplete church.

He, however, disclosed that the matter had been reported at the Oda Divisional Police Headquarters, Akure.

Meanwhile the police public relations officer in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya who confirmed the development said the command has commenced an investigation into the matter with a promise to prosecute anyone found culpable.
