It’s a fine call’ -Chelsea coach Graham Potter Says After Today’s Match

Graham Potter, the Chelsea coach, was not upset that the referee did not give his team a late penalty for a handball against West Ham on Saturday.

When Thomas Soucek looked to use his hand to block Conor Gallagher’s shot late in the game, the Chelsea players appealed for a penalty. The referee rejected their claims, and VAR did not intervene to ask him to review the incident.

Potter had no issues with the choice despite the criticism that followed the 1-1 draw.

I don’t believe there would have been many complaints if it had been made, but it’s a good call, in my opinion,” he told NBC Sports.

Chelsea is currently eighth in the Premier League after drawing their last three games. Potter was pleased with his team’s performance in the first half, but he felt the second half showed how new players like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Joao Felix had adapted to the group.

We got off to a good start, he said. “The attacking play was good. We attacked well, scored a good goal with the team ahead, had a few more opportunities and close offside calls. It’s upsetting because we need to play those situations out better because for around five or ten minutes we let them get a little bit of the upper hand before they scored.

The coach said, “The difficulty for us is to accomplish what we want to do over 90 minutes against clubs that are highly organized and they defend well, so that’s the work that you can see we have to do: getting players up to speed, getting them suited to the Premier League.”
