King Charles Diagnosed For Cancer

Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer, discovered during treatment for an enlarged prostate. The type of cancer has not been disclosed. The 75-year-old monarch has begun regular treatments and will temporarily postpone public duties. Despite the diagnosis, he remains optimistic about his treatment. Further details regarding the stage or prognosis of the cancer are not being shared. Charles personally informed his sons about his condition, and Prince Harry will be traveling to the UK to see him soon. Although the King will pause public events, he will continue with his constitutional role as head of state. This includes paperwork, private meetings, and his weekly audiences with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, which will be in person unless advised otherwise by doctors. In the event he is unable to carry out official duties, “counsellors of state” can be appointed, including Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward.

Prince Harry and the Duke of York are no longer part of this mechanism. Prince William, who recently supported his wife Catherine’s recovery from surgery, will return to public duties later this week.

The King had a prostate procedure more than a week ago, initially for a benign condition, but during the intervention, cancer was discovered.

He chose to go public about his treatment, having been a patron of cancer-related charities. His aim is to encourage more men to get prostate checks.

The Royal Society of Medicine thanked him for raising awareness and urged eligible individuals to undergo cancer screenings.

Cancer is prevalent in the UK, with more than 200 types, and the chance of developing it increases with age. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, and Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle wished the King a full recovery.

US President Joe Biden expressed concern and offered prayers for his swift recovery, citing his own family’s experience with cancer.

King Charles ascended to the throne in September 2022 and was coronated the following May.

His upcoming royal tours to Canada in May and to Australia, New Zealand, and Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October are yet to be confirmed by the Palace, as no date has been suggested for his return to full public duties.
