Players from Kwara United were doused in blood prior to their Confederation Cup match against AS Douanes.

The Confederation Cup match between Kwara United and AS Douanes was played on Sunday, and Kwara United claims that AS Douanes hired herbalists who sprinkled blood on their players.

WHAT OCCURED? In their first-round, first-leg match in Lagos last week, the Nigerian top-flight team lost 3-0 to the Nigeria Professional Football League team. Club supporters embraced a fetish practice by sprinkling salt on the field in an effort to advance to the next round.

WHAT THEY SAID: Kwara United presented a description of how things unfolded at the Stade General Seyni Kountche on Twitter: As Kwara United FC players prepared to take the field, AS Douanes recruited herbalists and spilled blood on them. The two herbalists performed the ritual, one holding a keg of blood and the other a goat.

The two herbalists, one with a keg of blood and the other with a goat performed the act when the players were coming down from the bus. No single policeman.”blood on players of the Ilorin-based outfit before Sunday’s second leg.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Despite their good fortune, AS Douanes were eliminated 3-0 overall after the game in Niamey finished in a 0-0 draw. Long stretches of the game were in favor of the hosts, but they would later lament lost scoring chances.

WHAT WILL KWARA UNITED DO NEXT? The RS Berkane of Morocco will be the opponent for the NPFL team in the second round of the Caf Confederation Cup. On October 9, Kwara United will host the opening leg, with Stade Municipal de Berkane hosting the return match one week later.
