LASU students shut gates in protest of soldiers maltreatment

On March 6, 2023, students at Lagos State University, Ojo, blocked the building’s entrance in protest of what they claimed to be student molestation and abuse by military personnel.

After some soldiers beat up members of the student government executive, it was reported that the incensed students closed up the Iyana-Iba and Ojo gates during the protest, prohibiting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

According to reports, on February 25, the SUG President and other executive members blocked voters whose voting locations were on the university campus from entering to cast their ballots. As it wanted students to vote first before allowing outsiders in, the SUG stated that this was done for the safety of its students.

The military entered with community members, who then battered the executives and some students. Eventually, the community people got admission.

According to Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the school’s public relations officer, normalcy has since been restored.
