Mr Ibu’s hospital funds: Children of Nollywood actor John Okafor arrested

Two of the children of the renowned Nigerian actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, have been apprehended for allegedly embezzling funds intended for their father’s medical expenses.

Last year, Mr Ibu, aged 62, underwent a leg amputation, with financial support from well-wishers who contributed to a crowdfunding initiative. However, his son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma are now facing accusations of unauthorized access to their father’s phone and misappropriating $60,700 (£47,800) from the donated funds for personal use.

Both Daniel and Jasmine have remained silent following their arrest in Lagos.

Authorities have released a statement regarding the arrest and ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent activity, subsequent to the siblings’ appearance at a bail hearing. The court has stipulated a $17,000 bond for potential release, but as of now, they remain in police custody.

According to investigations by the police’s criminal unit, it has been revealed that the accused individuals allegedly installed an application on their father’s mobile device during the crowdfunding period, enabling them to siphon money from his account.

The pair is scheduled to appear in court on 11th March for further legal proceedings.

Mr Ibu’s health concerns came into the public spotlight last October when a video surfaced on social media showing the Nollywood star recuperating in a hospital. In the video, he appealed to his fans for financial assistance with medical bills, garnering significant support.

The actor gained prominence two decades ago with his role in the Nigerian comedy “Mr Ibu,” a nickname that stuck with him. His performance in the film is still revered as one of the finest in Nigerian comedic cinema.

Over the years, he has appeared in numerous other noteworthy productions within Nollywood, Nigeria’s thriving film industry, spanning a career of more than two decades. In a previous interview with a local newspaper, Mr Ibu disclosed having a total of 13 children, some of whom were adopted.
