SSS vows to investigate operatives fighting with prison officials over custody

The State Security Service (SSS) has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into an incident where some of its operatives were involved in a physical altercation with officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) over the custody of the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, on Wednesday, the SSS expressed regret over the unfortunate incident and emphasized that it does not align with the professional standards upheld by the service. Furthermore, the SSS stated unequivocally that such behavior would not be tolerated or encouraged in any way.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, during the arraignment of Mr. Emefiele on charges of illegal possession of weapons. Videos circulating online showed SSS operatives confronting an NCS officer and damaging his uniform during the confrontation.

The SSS clarified that they took note of the incident and wished to reassure the public that they would take appropriate measures to address the matter and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

The suspension of the CBN Governor, Mr. Emefiele, is related to two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and the case is being heard before Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

Numerous human rights activists and the Nigerian Bar Association have strongly condemned the actions of the SSS, considering it a regrettable display of shame. The SSS’s commitment to investigating the matter and preventing similar occurrences is aimed at restoring confidence in their professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.
