      UNICAL suspends 4 students over ‘water ritual’

      UNICAL suspends 4 students over ‘water ritual’; The University of Calabar has suspended four students after a viral video shared online recorded the students engaging in a “water ritual” on a fellow female student.

      According to a press release released by Mr. Gabriel Egbe, Registrar of the college, on Saturday, January 7, the unlawful act was committed by students during the institution’s final matriculation ceremony on December 2, 2022.

      The perpetrators were shown in the video throwing buckets of water on the first-year student, who was plainly distressed and fighting to break free from the practice. The water ritual is primarily performed in Nigerian higher education institutions to commemorate graduation, birthdays, and matriculations.

      The suspended pupils were named as Stephen Usen, a year 4 Accounting Department student, Aniefiok Idorenyin, a year 2 Computer Science student, Miracle Adeyemi, a year 2 Political Science student, and Blessing Queen, a year 4 Genetics and Biotech student.
