What Is A State?

A state can be defined as a politically organised body of people living in a geographical territory under an organized government, free from external control and aggression.

If you look carefully you can see that the features of a state can be derived from its definition.

Features / Characteristics Of A State

1. A state is permanent, it can’t expire.

2. A state has a defined geographic territory.

3. A state has an organized government

4. A state has sovereignty, which means it must be free from external control or aggression.

5. A state must have a population, that is people living in it.

Difference Between A State And Others

State And Government

A state is a politically organised body of people living in a geographical territory under an organized government, free from external control and aggression, while the government is a machinery that guides and controls the direction of a state hence keeping it from going into a state of anarchy.

State And Nation

A state’s existence is simply based on an organised body of people, living in a location and having government but the nation is different, a key ingredient is important in the nation. “Similarity” a nation is a group of people who share similar culture, language, economy and history.

State And Society

Society is bigger than the state, because every association of human beings makes up a society, while a state is limited to the definition given above.
