The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) has approved the establishment of an Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies. The approval was given on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, during the statutory sitting of Senate at the Postgraduate Hall.

Professor Joseph Kinanee, Director of Academic Planning, presented the proposal to the Senate, which was chaired by Professor Okechuku Onuchuku. The Institute is awaiting resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC) alongside other programmes.

Highlights of the Senate Meeting:

  • Appointment of a Director to head the Institute
  • Approval of results presented by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Faculty Deans, and Director of Centre for Continuing Education
  • Concerns over students’ lack of attendance in classes and measures to address impersonation during examinations
  • Urgent call for lecturers to insist on course registration with passport photographs
  • Caution against extortion and emphasis on personal effort to improve the system
  • Gratitude expressed by the Head of Department of French and International Studies for support given to French Language students
  • Enjoinder to staff to put off electrical appliances to prevent fire outbreaks
  • Disciplinary action to be taken against the student responsible for the recent fire outbreak in the female hostel

The Acting Vice Chancellor lauded the Dean of Postgraduate School and Associate Dean for producing two useful journals and encouraged them to make it a yearly endeavour. He also informed the Senate that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has mobilized to site for the building of Corpers’ Lodge and Science Laboratory.
