SUBJECT: LITERATURE-IN-ENGLISH, PAPER I: DRAMA

TIME ALLOWED: THREE HOURS (3 HRS)

INSTRUCTION: Answer FIVE (5) questions. ONE (1) from Section A, TWO (2) questions from Section B and ONE (1) question each from Sections C and D. Do not use a text to illustrate more than one question.

SECTION A: SOCIO-POLITICAL BACKGROUND

Answer ONE (1) question from this Section. Each question carries 20 marks.

1. “Historical events in Africa have been textualized in the drama”. Explain with suitable illustrations from an African historical play.

2. Assess Aristophanes’ contribution to Greek comedy.

3. Examine the place Miracle and Morality played in the Medieval period.

SECTION B: CONTEXT QUESTIONS

Answer TWO (2) questions from this section. Do not answer the two context questions from the same text.

4. The Government inspector: Nikolai Gogol

Either

(a) Yes, He’s an able chap, knows his subject, but he expounds it with so much heat, that there is no understanding of him. I listened to him once; while he was talking about the Assyrians and the Babylonians, he was all right, but when he came to Alexander the Great, it was simply indescribable. I thought the place was on fire. He jumped down from his desk, took a chair and bandaged it on the floor brandished it over his head. I think he was describing a battle. Now, Alexander the Great was a great general and all that, but why break the chairs, they are Government property.

Either

(a) Hamlet is responsible for his tragic end. Assess the validity of this statement.

OR

(b) Discuss the factors that lead to Hamlet’s procrastination in heeding the instruction of the Ghost.

7. Antigone: Sophocles

Either

(a) In the light of the Aristotelian tragedy, why is Creon viewed as a tragic hero?

(b) Contrast Antigone and Ismene in terms of their character traits.

 8. The Government Inspector: Nikolai Gogol

Either

(a) The play, The Government Inspector, depicts the theme of deception.

(b) Explain the Symbolic Significance of the Mayor in the text.

9. Waiting for Godot: Samuel Beckett

Either

(a) Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, is a play embellished with physical, mental and emotional anguish, Discuss.

(b) Waiting for Godot is a demonstration of the human condition in the modern era. Explain with suitable illustration from the text.

SECTION D: ESSAYS (AFRICAN DRAMA)

10. Death and the King’s Horseman: Wole Soyinka

Either 

(a) Examine the Cultural Ideology in Death and King’s Horseman.

OR 

(b) Death and the King’s Horseman portrays an individual forgetting his traditional duty to his community. Is this a fitting description of the message in the play? 

11. Sizwe Bansi is Dead: Athol Fugard

Either

(a) “The play exemplifies an individual’s determination to alter his social class”. Does this describe Ananse’s mission in the play?

OR

(b) “Ananse’s method of survival reflects the Machiavellian doctrine”. Is this an apt description of Ananse’s character in the play?
