JAMB boss blames Nigeria’s underdevelopment on brain drain emigration; Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), asserted on Wednesday that the emigration of Nigerians to developed countries is contributing to the underdevelopment of the country.

He made these remarks during the 17th convocation lecture of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) in Awka, themed ‘Mainstreaming Uncertainty: Getting Ready for the University of Life.’
According to Mr. Oloyede, the movement of both skilled and unskilled labour to advanced countries is depriving Nigeria of the necessary tools for positive change and development.
He expressed concern about the economic impact, noting that certain sectors like banking and information and communication technology (ICT) have suffered due to the emigration of qualified professionals.
The JAMB Registrar highlighted various dimensions of uncertainty in Nigeria, including political uncertainty, economic uncertainty, security threats, social inequalities, and ethnic and religious tensions.
He emphasized that these uncertainties have led to challenges such as “wealth without work and knowledge without character,” contributing to social media addiction and provocative practices.
In addressing the graduating students, Mr. Oloyede encouraged them to face the uncertainties of life with courage, focus, and hard work. He urged them to seek support and receive a proper education to navigate the unpredictable contemporary times.
During the convocation lecture, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the chairman of the occasion, commended the management of NAU for innovative measures implemented to enhance the institution.
Prof. Charles Esimone, the Vice-Chancellor of NAU, emphasized that the purpose of this year’s convocation lecture was to prepare young graduates for the challenges they would encounter outside the university.
