LASU Senate Elects New DVC; the Senate of Lagos State University has chosen Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan to serve as the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics).

Prof. Omobitan won the election held today, Monday, January 30, 2023, defeating Prof. the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences.

The Senate of Lagos State University has chosen Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan to serve as the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics).

Prof. Omobitan won the election held today, Monday, January 30, 2023, defeating Prof. the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences.

PROFESSOR OLUFUNSHO ABAYOMI OMOBITAN’s PROFILE

Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan was born in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria, on July 5, 1956. In 1984 and 1987, respectively, he earned his Master of Science in Economics and Ph.D. in Economics (Development Economics and Public Sector Economics) from the University of Vienna in Austria.

He began working at Lagos State University in 1989 as a Lecturer II and worked his way up to Associate Professor in 2012 and Professor of Economics in 2015.
From 1998 until 2005, he served as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program Director at Lagos State University. He was chosen to join the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee in October 2021. (NRFS & MC).

The economics professor was appointed to the Lagos State University Ventures Board in August 2022, the Procurement Planning Committee for Lagos State University in February 2022, and the Search Committee for the Appointment of the Lagos State Government Endowed Professorial Chair in Transportation at Lagos State University in September 2022.

Professor Olufunsho Omobitan has written or co-authored more than thirty (30) journal papers and nine (9) books.

He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (FNIPR) and a member of the research and publication committee of the Nigerian Chartered Institute of Bankers. He is also a member of the Nigerian Economic Society.

Prof. Omobitan has received numerous accolades, including the TETFUND 2020 National Research Fund Grant for the project Emerging Patterns and Determination of Rape: Comparative Study of Rural-Urban Communities in Nigeria, the Afro-Asian Institute in Vienna, Austria Scholarship, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Scholarship, and the Lagos State Bursary Award 1979–1983.

The economics professor has taken part in a number of conferences, workshops, exhibits, and technical meetings in several states both inside Nigeria and outside. He has a child and is married.

He currently serves as the Dean of the Lagos State University’s Faculty of Social Sciences in Ojo, Badagry, Nigeria.
Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi OMOBITAN has been elected as the next deputy vice chancellor for academics.
