“Learn by doing” is key, especially for boys, but not exclusively. Along with basic subjects, children need hands-on experience to master the skills necessary for a successful, well-rounded life by the time they’re 21. These include manual skills, intellectual skills, critical thinking, and social interaction—all of which are essential for reducing anxiety and thriving in adulthood.

Unfortunately, institutional schools aren’t equipped to provide this kind of comprehensive education. Parents who think schools are handling every aspect of their child’s development are mistaken. By neglecting to actively engage in their child’s growth, they risk raising kids who become overly reliant on social media and struggle in both work and life.

Online schooling can be an improvement over traditional schools with weak curriculums and wasted time, but it’s only the first step. Parents must play an active role, fully participating in their children’s education to ensure they develop the practical, intellectual, and social skills needed for the future.

One historical figure who shocked me when I learned more about them was Thomas Edison. Most people know him as the brilliant inventor who gave us the light bulb and other amazing innovations, but there’s a darker side to his story that I didn’t expect.

For instance, Edison had a famous rivalry with another inventor, Nikola Tesla. Tesla came up with a better system of electricity called AC (alternating current), while Edison was pushing for his version, DC (direct current). Instead of having a healthy competition, Edison went to extreme lengths to discredit Tesla’s invention. He even staged public demonstrations where he electrocuted animals—ranging from dogs to an elephant—to make people think AC was dangerous. It was disturbing to learn that someone so celebrated could be so manipulative and ruthless.

In addition to this, Edison had a pattern of taking credit for the work of others. He was great at promoting himself and building his reputation, but many of the inventions he claimed as his own were actually the ideas of his employees or even his competitors. This habit of claiming others’ achievements as his own really altered how I viewed him.

Discovering these facts completely changed my perspective on Edison. I had always admired him as this incredible genius we were taught to look up to, but learning about his questionable actions was really disappointing. It definitely shifted how I think about him as a historical figure.

There’s no justifiable reason to leave a 10week old baby unsupervised for 8hours. Indefensible. If she was in such a tight place financially, she could have called the council for help. She could have informed her employer/recruiter. She could have even informed the hospital. An arrangement would be made to either keep the baby safe or support her financially till the baby is a lot older. And then trying to lie about what happened to the police and even attempt to elope the country. Horrible criminal behaviour to be honest. There’s no acceptable defence. It’s an unfortunate pitiable mess.

DSS Releases Journalist Adejuwon Soyinka After Airport Arrest

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, a journalist with The Conversation Africa, who was arrested on Sunday morning at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Dayo Aiyetan, the Executive Director of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), confirmed Soyinka’s release in a post on X (formerly Twitter). At 1:36 pm, Aiyetan wrote, “Thank you everyone. Juwon Soyinka has just been released by @OfficialDSSNG in Lagos.”

Soyinka was arrested by DSS officials around 5:40 am after arriving from the United Kingdom and was taken into custody shortly afterward. As of now, the reasons for his arrest and subsequent detention remain unclear. The DSS has not disclosed if there were any specific conditions for his release.

Efforts to reach Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson for the DSS, for comments or clarification were unsuccessful. Phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp messages, and emails sent to him had not been responded to by the time of this report.

Soyinka’s arrest is part of a troubling trend of journalists facing increased scrutiny and detention by Nigerian authorities. Recently, ‘Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was released on bail after turning himself in at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) on August 14. Similarly, FIJ reporter Daniel Ojukwu was abducted by the police in May, spending 10 days in detention before being released. As part of his bail conditions, Ojukwu must now travel from Lagos to Abuja every two weeks.

These incidents raise ongoing concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria.

Update: 

Nigerian Singer Dammy Krane Detained for 4 Days Over Tweets About Davido

Nigerian singer Oyindamola Emmanuel, popularly known as Dammy Krane, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) for four days due to tweets he made involving David Adeleke, better known as Davido.

On Wednesday, Dammy Krane was invited to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos State, to answer questions related to cryptocurrency trading, as reported by FIJ. Upon his arrival, he was informed of a petition sent from Abuja that mentioned Davido and accused Dammy Krane of cyberstalking.

After presenting the petition to him, the police confiscated Dammy Krane’s personal belongings and detained him at the SCID. The following day, he was flown to Abuja to provide a statement at the NPF-NCCC office.

While in detention, Dammy Krane was able to access his phone and contact a lawyer. He also tweeted, alleging that “Oppressor Davido has paid them to arrest me. They wrote a petition lying that I am involved in Flutterwave and crypto scam just to arrest me. This is how they keep using the bad cops to spoil the name of the police.”

According to sources close to the situation, FIJ learned that the police are accusing Dammy Krane of criminal defamation and cyberstalking based on previous tweets in which he suggested that Davido had knowledge about the death of Tagbo Umeike, an associate of Davido, on October 3, 2017. Dammy Krane cited a video where police admitted that Davido misled them during their investigation into Tagbo’s death and called for further scrutiny into Davido’s potential involvement.

These accusations were reportedly detailed in the petition filed with the police.

On Thursday, Dammy Krane was granted bail, but the police required him to provide a level 14 civil servant as a surety to secure his release. As of press time, he had not met this condition and remained in custody at the FCID in Abuja.

A source disclosed that Dammy Krane had previously filed a petition with the police over threats to his life, naming Davido as a primary suspect. However, the Lagos police did not summon Davido for questioning.

The conflict between Dammy Krane and Davido began after Dammy Krane demanded royalty payments for a song he wrote for Davido. The song, titled “Pere,” features Davido, Young Thug, and Swae Lee.

Despite a repeal in February 2024, the police continue to use Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act (2015) to arrest and detain Nigerians.

WAEC Releases 2024 West African Senior School Examination Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across Nigeria.

This announcement was made on Monday through the examination body’s official X handle, urging all candidates to visit their official website to check their results.

“The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform Candidates who sat WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024, that the results have officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024,” WAEC stated.

The examination took place in Nigeria between Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

As of now, WAEC has not yet released official data on the performance of students for the 2024 examination. However, for context, the data from the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates showed that out of 80,904 candidates who sat for the exam, 39,790 were males and 41,114 were females, representing 49.18% and 50.82%, respectively.

Additionally, 46,267 candidates, representing 57.19%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.
