Monash University PhD Scholarship in Energy Futures

About

This Ph.D. project, based at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), will look into how energy companies can institutionalize and operationalize Futures approaches, such as Foresight, exploratory, and normative scenarios, to enable the transition to net zero energy. The project is expected to address the fundamental question of what governance arrangements, institutional frameworks, and organizational capacities are required to embed Futures approaches in net zero transition planning by using a knowledge co-production approach with the Australian energy industry. The project’s outcomes will address current energy governance and market issues as well as prepare for future issues.

This is an opportunity for someone with a passion for future studies, energy and sustainability transitions, management, and social sciences to create an original research project. The project is not about developing scenarios or modeling energy futures; rather, it is about how futures and scenarios can be effectively embedded into the industry and organizational decision-making, as well as how institutional and organizational processes and capacities can be strengthened to support anticipatory action aligned with net zero transitions.

Eligibility

Due to the terms of the scholarship, only domestic (Australian and New Zealand citizens/permanent residents) applicants are eligible.
