As an “initiation rite,” students sprinkle water over graduating and matriculating students during the “water ritual.”

The vice chancellor, Florence Obi, reportedly ordered the end to the practice, which she claimed was no longer acceptable and violated people’s rights, according to the university’s registrar, Gabriel Egbe, who made the announcement in Calabar on Friday.

A viral video showing a female student being treated indignantly at the most recent matriculation led the vice chancellor to order that the practice be stopped. A group of young males engaged in callous and barbaric behavior on the videotape, the registrar said.

In addition to the official revocation of the reprehensible behavior, Mr. Egbe continued, “A committee has been established to look into the heinous act committed against the female student, and any found guilty will face the proper sanctions.

He said Austin Bisong, the university’s acting chief security officer, and other pertinent authorities “have been charged to guarantee that the terrible occurrence never occurs again.”
