Dollar General TESOL Scholarship

About

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was founded in 1993 to provide opportunities for those who want a basic education. The foundation assists students as they learn English or prepare for a high school equivalency test. Recently, the focus has shifted to helping non-native English speakers in the community access these literacy services.

Dr. Logsdon from the Center for Literacy has partnered with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for many years to help with adult literacy. However, this is the first time such a great effort has been made to connect these services with non-native English speakers in the community. She hopes this will make a big difference for those needing help improving their literacy skills.

Eligibility

Students can use the scholarship to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The scholarship recipients will each receive $500 for 30 hours of ESL community instruction. Dr. Jeremy Logsdon, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and Director of the Center for Literacy, is offering the scholarship thanks to funding from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993. The foundation’s goal is to provide students with opportunities for a basic education by assisting them in learning English or preparing for a high school equivalency test.

How to Apply

To apply for this scholarship, students must be declared TESOL minors at WKU. If you have any questions about the scholarship or the application process, please contact Dr. Logsdon at jeremy.logsdon@wku.edu.

Benefits

“This scholarship will benefit both teaching English to non-native speakers in our community and assisting WKU students in developing the skills needed to be successful in teaching English to speakers of other languages.” We hope that this is the first semester of a long-term project to assist students interested in becoming ESL teachers and practitioners.”
