Abia state government orders immediate fee hike reversal in ABSU
Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, has directed the management of Abia State University to rescind the alleged increase in tuition fees announced by the university management on Monday, April 17, 2023.
The decision was stated in a statement published by Onyebuchi Ememanka, the governor’s media aide, on Monday evening, April 17. The cost, which had been hiked by more than 350%, was termed as “unacceptable” in the statement, which demanded its immediate cancellation.
While it is becoming increasingly difficult for the university to operate efficiently under the current fiscal regime, the governor stated that the school’s administration must understand that it must ensure that poor children in the state have access to tertiary education.
Before considering any increase in school fees, the university administration was also required to interact with all key stakeholders in the community and undertake meaningful talks. It also guaranteed the institution that the state government would continue to provide subventions.
