To assist more Ghanaians in learning one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, China and Ghana vowed to increase their collaboration in Chinese language education.

The commitment was made during a one-day online China-Ghana International Conference on Chinese Language Education, which was attended by administrators and academic staff from the University of Ghana and China’s Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT).

Along with the representatives from the two colleges, the meeting also drew notable experts in the field from China and Africa.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana was founded with cooperation from the two universities in 2013, and it has since become a model of China-Ghana educational cooperation, according to Yu Xiaofen, vice president of the ZJUT, who spoke at the conference.

She claimed that the institute, which currently has about 3,500 students enrolled and has trained more than 20,000 Ghanaians since it first opened, played a significant role in fostering cultural interactions between China and Ghana.

With the constant efforts of both parties, Ms. Yu promised that the ZJUT would fully support the development of the institute. She also stated that the cooperation on Chinese language education will advance.

Vice President of the University of Ghana Felix Ankomah Asante praised the Confucius Institute for its major contribution to the university’s teaching of Chinese language and culture.

In addition to providing instruction, the institute has given students wonderful opportunities to advance their understanding of the Chinese language and culture, according to Mr. Asante.

He claimed that the meeting was essential for exchanging concepts regarding the growth of Chinese language instruction in Africa.

All parties involved in Chinese language education should use this conference as a starting point for additional contacts and scholarly exchanges, he continued.

Noting that the institute will be celebrating its tenth anniversary the following year, he expressed the hope that the two parties would work together more effectively.
