Augustine Eguavoen, the former Nigeria international, has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles following Jose Peseiro’s departure last Friday. This temporary assignment was confirmed on Saturday by the Super Eagles media officer, Raji Babafemi, in response to inquiries about the situation.

Babafemi explained that it is standard procedure for the Technical Director (TD) to step in as the interim coach whenever there’s a vacancy in the head coaching position of the main national team.

Eguavoen, who also holds the position of technical director, steps into the role of interim coach, a position he has previously held. His return comes after a period where he was moved from the interim coach role following the team’s exit from the 2021 AFCON in the round of 16 and their failure to secure a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Raji Babafemi noted that Eguavoen’s appointment as the interim head coach is in line with protocol and will last until the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appoints a permanent head coach, a decision on which the NFF has not yet made an official statement.

This marks the fourth occasion Eguavoen has been tasked with leading the national team, with his initial tenure spanning from 2005 to 2007, then briefly in 2010, and later from 2021 to 2022. The need for Eguavoen’s latest appointment arose after Mr. Peseiro announced his exit from the role on X following the NFF’s decision not to renew his contract, despite the Nigerian team’s commendable performance in the recent AFCON, where they finished second.
