The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its prohibition on the utilization of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic mobile money devices within its stations and other facilities throughout the nation, following widespread public concern over supposed “illegal and illicit transactions” involving POS operators and some police personnel.
In a press release issued by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, on Monday, it was disclosed that there have been instances where certain NPF commands and formations have ignored this directive. The prohibition aims to ensure the security and integrity of police activities are maintained.
Adejobi highlighted the risks associated with the in-premises use of these payment methods, such as the potential for compromising sensitive data and facilitating unauthorized activities.
The official statement emphasized, “In light of the public disapproval concerning illegal and unethical dealings via point-of-sale (POS) machine operators in collusion with some police staff, the Nigeria Police Force reasserts the ban on the use of POS machines and similar electronic mobile money transaction tools within police stations and other facilities across the nation.”
The purpose of this ban is to safeguard the operations of the police, prevent potential corruption, avoid any criminal exploitation under this pretext, and uphold discipline within the Force.
Despite prior notices, Adejobi remarked that the leadership of the Force has noticed ongoing non-compliance with this rule in some commands and formations. Therefore, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a warning that any breaches of this prohibition will result in strict penalties for the leaders of the offending commands and formations.
“The use of electronic payment devices inside police properties introduces serious threats including the potential leak of confidential information, financial misdemeanors, and the encouragement of illegal actions. Hence, it is imperative to strictly follow this order,” the release stated in part.
Additionally, the FPRO mentioned that Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called for strict adherence to this mandate. He cautioned that any police officer or POS operator violating this policy, or engaging in illicit financial dealings, will be subject to strict disciplinary and legal measures, with their commanding officers also held accountable.
