The increase in bursaries, according to Mr. Alabi, will benefit students at state, federal, and private higher education institutions across the country who are native-born.
The Kwara State administration has announced that it will enhance the N5,000 student bursary payout to N10,000.
Abolore Alabi, the commissioner for higher education, verified this on Wednesday in Ilorin during the 34th media parliament, which was hosted by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The increase in bursaries, according to Mr. Alabi, will benefit students at state, federal, and private higher education institutions across the country who are native-born.
In order to expedite the implementation of the new bursary increment, he added that the state government would shortly launch a registration gateway for the students.
Regarding the survival of state-owned institutions, the commissioner claimed that because the administration led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq gave them funding priority, they were all essentially autonomous.
He also said all the state-owned tertiary institutions had been strengthened to actualise their core mandates of teaching, learning, research and community development.
Earlier, the chairman of the state council of NUJ, Abdul-Lateef Ahmed, called for a realistic funding model for state-owned tertiary institutions to enhance a smooth academic calendar.
Mr Ahmed, who expressed concern over the quality of graduates being churned out by most of the nation’s tertiary institutions, called for a total overhauling of the education sector for the growth and development of the country.
