The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, representing organised labour, have declared a nationwide strike commencing on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The decision was reached after a meeting of the National Executive Council in Abuja.
An official, who spoke to The PUNCH on the condition of anonymity, revealed that a press release from the labour centres would provide further details. The unions had previously called for an extraordinary NEC meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the terms of the upcoming strike, which was organized in response to the brutalization of NLC National President Joe Ajaero. The attendees also reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed on October 2, 2023, between the Federal Government and organized labor. Additionally, the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit subsidy was discussed, as the labor centers claimed that it had caused “untold hardship” to Nigerians..

The labour centres have demanded the redeployment of the commissioner of police in the state and the arrest and prosecution of the government aide who was allegedly responsible for the brutalization of NLC National President Joe Ajaero. The extraordinary NEC meeting was called to discuss the terms of the upcoming strike. The attendees also reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed on October 2, 2023, between the Federal Government and organized labor. The labor centers claimed that the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit subsidy had caused “untold hardship” to Nigerians, which was also discussed in the meeting.
The labour centres have given the government five days, starting from Friday, to meet their demands, failing which they would embark on a nationwide industrial action.
Ajaero was taken into police custody prior to the Imo state-wide protest on Wednesday, as disclosed by the NLC’s Head of Information, Benson Upah. Although the police claimed that he was only being held for his safety to prevent a potential mob attack, the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, accused him of interfering in the political affairs of the state.
The assault on the labour leader has been denounced by several prominent Nigerians and civil society organizations, such as Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and human rights lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN).
