NANS condemns fee increment in EKSU, issues 72 hours reversal ultimatum

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed its displeasure over the recent increment in tuition fees at Ekiti State University (EKSU) and has issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the reversal of the fees. The association has stated that if the university management fails to meet its demand, it will mobilize its members to shut down all activities in the university.

NANS, in a statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Azeez Adeyemi, on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, said that the association had been following the situation at EKSU and was appalled by the university management’s decision to increase tuition fees without considering the economic situation in the country.

The statement noted that the increment was not only a violation of the rights of students to education but also a callous attempt by the university management to exploit the students and their parents.

According to the association, the increment would make it impossible for many students to continue their education, as they would be unable to pay the new fees. This would lead to a situation where only the rich could afford to attend the university, while the poor would be left behind.

The association has, therefore, called on the university management to immediately reverse the fees to the old rates, in the interest of the students and their families.

Furthermore, NANS has vowed to resist any attempt by the university management to victimize any student who participates in the protest against the increment. The association has urged the students to remain resolute and to support its efforts to ensure that their rights to education are protected.

The statement ended by calling on the Ekiti State Government to intervene in the matter and ensure that the university management complies with the demands of the students.
