The leadership of the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Universities at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife branch, has expressed condolences to the family of the late Olabode Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist tragically killed by a lion in the OAU zoological garden on Monday.
Mr. Wole Odewumi, the NANTSU OAU branch chairman, speaking with The PUNCH regarding the incident, stated that details surrounding the event were not yet fully available. However, he confirmed that another staff member working at the garden was also injured during the incident.
While there were speculations suggesting that Olawuyi inadvertently left the cage open while attempting to feed the lion, resulting in the fatal attack, Odewumi refrained from confirming these claims. He pledged to visit the scene of the incident on Tuesday to ascertain more information.
Odewumi assured that the association’s leadership would engage with the university’s management to discuss the welfare of Olawuyi’s bereaved family. He emphasized that Olawuyi’s demise was a significant loss to the entire OAU community.
He expressed, “I received reports from a member of our association working at the garden that the incident occurred while the deceased was engaged in feeding the animal. Upon learning of this, I reached out to others on campus. It is indeed true that another staff member sustained injuries.”
“The injured staff member may have been hurt during the chaotic panic that ensued at the scene. As a union leader, it’s imperative to gather accurate details surrounding the incident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family. The deceased might have been the primary provider for his family.”
“We pray for divine comfort for them and urge them to come to terms with this tragedy. We will engage with the University management on Tuesday to discuss the necessary support for the deceased’s family. This loss is deeply felt within the university community, beyond just his immediate family.”
