Senate threatens to withhold UI funding over sack of female lecturer

The University of Ibadan is facing the threat of sanctions from the Ministry of Finance if it continues to reject the reinstatement of Dr. Adenike Ogunshe, a female lecturer who was wrongly terminated from her appointment in 2016. The warning came from Ayo Akinyelure, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, during the last sitting of the panel.

Senate threatens to withhold UI funding over sack of female lecturer

Dr. Ogunshe, a senior lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, had filed a petition to the Senate, alleging that her appointment was illegally terminated by the institution about 7 years ago. Despite a court order for her reinstatement, the university has failed to comply.

The Senate Committee had summoned the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, in January 2023, over the alleged assault, conspiracy, and victimization of Dr. Ogunshe. However, several invitations extended to the university management to appear before the panel had yielded no positive results.

During the session, Akinyelure warned that if the university continues to disobey the court order, he would direct the Ministry of Finance not to release funds to the University for its 2023 budget. He further lamented that the Senate might take appropriate sanctions against the Vice Chancellor if he fails to appear in person before the panel this week.

This issue has generated concerns among stakeholders in the education sector, as it threatens the academic reputation and integrity of the institution. It is hoped that the University of Ibadan will comply with the court order and reinstate Dr. Ogunshe to restore confidence in the institution’s commitment to upholding justice and fairness.

In conclusion, it is imperative that the University of Ibadan resolves this issue quickly and in a manner that upholds the principles of justice and fairness. Failure to do so could have far-reaching consequences for the institution’s reputation and its ability to attract and retain top-quality faculty and students.
