The Osun State Command of the Amotekun Corps has confirmed an assault on its operatives in Kajola village, situated along the Osogbo/Ilesa Road, allegedly carried out by suspected herders.
According to Idowu Yusuff, the spokesperson for the Corps, who spoke with PUNCH Online regarding the incident, farmers had previously lodged complaints about herders grazing their cattle on their farmlands in the area.
Yusuff elaborated that upon receiving the complaints, the Corps swiftly deployed operatives to the area. However, upon the approach of the Amotekun personnel, the herders opened fire on them.
Despite the gunfire, which failed to deter the advancing Amotekun operatives, the herders then allegedly incited their cattle to attack the officers. This resulted in injuries to three of the operatives.
Yusuff stated, “The incident occurred last week Saturday, and the injured personnel are currently hospitalized. We received reports from farmers in Kajola, a village along Osogbo/Ilesa road, about herders damaging their farms, prompting our immediate deployment.”
He continued, “Upon arrival, our personnel were met with gunfire from the herders, who were armed. Nonetheless, our operatives persisted. When it became apparent that bullets couldn’t halt their advance, the herders resorted to using their cattle as weapons against the Amotekun personnel.”
“In the ensuing chaos, three of our operatives sustained injuries. They remain hospitalized. The herders fled into the bush, leaving their cattle behind. Normalcy has since been restored to the area.”
This incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in Osun State, with farmers seeking respite from the activities of roaming herders, particularly in January 2024.
