Tinubu Begs Judge Not To Reveal His Gender.

President Bola Tinubu has reluctantly agreed to allow a U.S. federal judge to provide his university certificate to his political opponent, Atiku Abubakar. However, President Tinubu has appealed to Judge Nancy Maldonado to withhold all other details, particularly gender and admission records, of the certificate holder from being disclosed.

This development occurred within the ongoing legal battle unfolding at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. The case was initiated by Mr. Abubakar, who has been on a legal quest to establish that President Tinubu was not eligible to serve as Nigerian president despite his election victory in February 2023.

President Tinubu secured the election with 36 percent of the vote after a falling out between Mr. Abubakar and his running mate in the 2019 election, Peter Obi, which resulted in a split of their potential votes. This division allowed President Tinubu to win with the slimmest margin in Nigerian presidential election history.

President Tinubu’s agreement to release his certificate came after narrowly avoiding full disclosure on September 21 by invoking concerns for his personal safety to obtain a stay of a magistrate judge’s order issued on September 19.

President Tinubu’s legal team argued in their court brief seeking a review of Judge Jeffrey Gilbert’s order by Judge Maldonado that there was potential harm in allowing discovery on issues and documents beyond the diploma.

The identity of the individual admitted to Chicago State University in the 1970s has become a contentious issue, especially after college transcripts indicated that the university admitted a female student named Bola Tinubu from Southwest College Chicago in 1977.

While President Tinubu’s lawyers, led by Victor Henderson and Christopher Carmichael, maintained that the documents Mr. Abubakar sought would not be admissible at the Supreme Court, they seemed to anticipate the possibility of an unfavorable ruling and thus provided an alternative direction. They requested the judge to order the school to certify strictly the certificate President Tinubu presented to run for election.

In Mr. Gilbert’s ruling last week, CSU administrators were instructed to confirm under oath the authenticity of the certificate President Tinubu submitted in Nigeria. Furthermore, they were required to present a certificate issued to a CSU graduate in 1979 with the individual’s identity redacted and provide communications related to a letter the school issued to President Tinubu in 2022.

President Tinubu expressed concern that allowing the deposition of CSU officials to proceed could result in severe, irreparable harm to his life. He argued that Mr. Abubakar’s actions were merely a fishing expedition aimed at fueling online conspiracy theories.

In a recent filing, a man named Olajide Adeniji submitted an affidavit claiming that he attended school with President Tinubu from 1977 to 1979.
