Two Nigerian ‘Cultists’ Arrested in South Africa for Cybercrime

On Wednesday, Interpol and the Hawks, South Africa’s priority crimes investigative unit, arrested two unidentified Nigerians for cybercrime-related offenses in Pretoria.

The Nigerians, aged 39 and 42, are alleged to be linked to syndicates operating sophisticated cybercrime networks, according to TimesLIVE, a South African online newspaper.

The two Nigerians are also said to be members of the Air Lords, a rival confraternity of South Africa’s Black Axe movement.

“The joint team’s search and seizure operation in Wapadrand and Sunnyside recovered electronic equipment, including laptops and phones, thousands of rand in cash, and an unlicensed firearm,” Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said in a statement.

“The two foreign nationals are said to be members of the cult known as the ‘Air Lords,’ who are rivals of the ‘Black Axe’ movement.” Interpol will charge, detain, and extradite the suspects.

“The suspects will be linked to online scams that the 419 provincial task team is investigating.” This arrest is one of several that have occurred concurrently in other countries in order to track down suspects involved in online scams such as romance, investments, Bitcoin, employment, and related advance fee fraud.

Mogale added that the arrested suspects would appear in court soon on charges of wire fraud conspiracy, access device fraud conspiracy, fraud conspiracy, and money laundering schemes.

One of the suspects will also be charged with illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.

The Nigerians are also likely to join the growing list of Nigerian organized crime members who have been arrested and later extradited to the United States of America on business e-mail compromise and romance scam charges.
