USA: Joran van der Sloot confesses to killing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, but her body remains unrecovered, says judge.
After nearly two decades of mystery and misery surrounding the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba, Joran van der Sloot, a long-time suspect in her case, has made a gruesome confession to her murder. Court documents reveal that this revelation came shortly after he pled guilty in federal court to extortion and fraud involving Holloway’s family.
Van der Sloot had been accused of attempting to extort $250,000 from Beth Holloway, Natalee’s mother, in exchange for information about the location of Natalee’s remains. Following his confession, Beth Holloway declared, “It’s over. Joran van der Sloot is no longer the suspect in my daughter’s murder.
He is the killer.” She continued, “After 18 years, Natalee’s case is solved.”
In his confession, Van der Sloot, now 36, described a violent encounter on an Aruban beach. He admitted to using a cinder block to kill Natalee after she rejected his advances. According to an interview transcript with his attorney, he claimed that Natalee kneed him after he made unwanted advances, leading to his brutal response.
Despite this confession, Natalee Holloway’s body has never been found. In 2012, an Alabama judge legally declared her deceased. According to Aruban authorities, Van der Sloot had previously been arrested multiple times in connection with her disappearance but was released due to a lack of direct evidence.
Apart from the Holloway case, Van der Sloot had been convicted of killing Stephany Flores, a Peruvian woman, in 2010. This prompted his sentencing to 20 years for the federal charges in the United States.
Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for Flores’ murder. However, due to Peruvian law, his prison sentence cannot exceed 35 years. He was temporarily released to the U.S. in June to face extortion and wire fraud charges.
A plea agreement stipulated that his 20-year U.S. federal sentence would run concurrently with his Peruvian sentence, making it unlikely for him to return to the U.S. for further imprisonment.
Natalee Holloway’s case has remained a mystery for 18 years. She disappeared during a high school graduation trip to Aruba in 2005 and was last seen leaving a nightclub with Joran van der Sloot and two other men. While the men were initially arrested in 2005, they were released due to insufficient evidence. Subsequently, they were charged in 2007 with involvement in Natalee’s death, but the case faced setbacks and their release followed.
Joran van der Sloot’s involvement with the U.S. legal system was due to charges related to an alleged plot to sell information about Natalee Holloway’s remains to her family. A federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him for extortion and wire fraud. During the weeks between the extortion attempt and the indictment, he also killed Stephany Flores in Peru.
