Idris Bugaje, the NBTE executive secretary, revealed this on Monday.

At the moment, assistant teachers at polytechnics can only be degree holders.

Mr. Bugaje bemoaned the “gross unfairness” of HND holders being forced to work as technicians and technologists in polytechnic laboratories and workshops.

“Why should someone from the academic system come and impose their dominance on a different system? The HND is the highest product in the polytechnics, according to the NBTE boss. The finest graduates should therefore be hired as assistant instructors and advance through the systems to earn their master’s degrees.

They can advance through the ranks to become head lecturers and finally succeed in the position of rectors at their respective universities, he continued.

The new Scheme of Service for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, the NBTE chairman continued, would improve the situation.

He clarified that the head of the service would need to approve the service plan by the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.
