About the Scholarship:
The University of Birmingham PhD Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for Black British Researchers to engage with an under-researched collection of African art at the University of Birmingham. This collection, housed within the Research and Cultural Collections (RCC), encompasses a diverse range of cultural traditions and artistic expressions, celebrating communities such as Yorùbá, Hausa, and Asante.
Through this scholarship, recipients will delve into critical assessments of these art objects and explore innovative approaches to engage diaspora communities and widen audience participation.
Key Aims of the PhD:
- Conduct the first in-depth critical assessment of art objects from the African collection at the University of Birmingham.
- Explore new methods and approaches to engage diaspora communities and widen audience participation in museum settings.
- Contribute to ongoing efforts to decolonize curricula and university collections by addressing the colonial legacy of museum collections in Europe and North America.
Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be UK nationals eligible for registration as Home students.
- Belong to one of the specified ethnic groups, including Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed – White and Black Caribbean, Mixed – White and Black African, or Other mixed backgrounds.
- Not be enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Birmingham.
Selection Process: Applicants should hold an MA in a relevant subject of Merit or higher. Exceptional cases may be considered based on a first-class undergraduate degree or substantial equivalent experience.
