Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has relaunched the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN) initiative, aimed at improving economic planning for citizens and addressing the issue of multiple taxation. The announcement was made by the commissioner for information and culture, Okey Kanu, during a press conference at the Government House in Umuahia.
This relaunch, effective from March 2, seeks to facilitate social protection and promote inclusivity in governance.
ABSSIN is designed to serve as a unique identifier for all residents of Abia State, streamlining transactions and interactions with the state’s internal revenue services.
Udochukwu Ogbonna, the chairman of the Abia State Internal Revenue Services (ABIRS), emphasized the importance of ABSSIN for tax payments and stated that it would consolidate all transactions under one account for each citizen. This system is expected to offer various benefits, including access to government scholarships.
Registration for ABSSIN can be completed online through the ‘Abiapay online‘ platform, at ABIRS offices across the 17 local government areas, and at various ministries. This initiative is not limited to tax-related matters but extends to facilitating access to social benefits provided by the government.
Kingsley Anosike, the commissioner for budget and planning, highlighted that ABSSIN will also serve as a critical source of data for economic planning and ensure that citizens can easily access government services and benefits.
The special adviser to the governor on internally generated revenue, Chimeremeze Okigbo, added that the ABSSIN registration process is free and aims to enhance security measures within the state, contributing to a crime-free environment.
This development represents a strategic move by the Abia State government to enhance the welfare of its citizens through improved economic planning and efficient governance.
OAU Announces Another 2022/2023 JUPEB Supplementary Date
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) management has published the date for the extra JUPEB entrance exam for the 2022/2023 term.
The OAU JUPEB Supplementary entrance examination for 2022/2023 will be held on November 8, 2022.

What Is OAU JUPEB About?
The University of Lagos recently established and coordinates the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB), a new Advanced Level examination organization. The program is essentially the same as the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB), which is supervised by the University of Lagos and accepted by numerous universities in Northern Nigeria. Candidates who successfully finish the ONE-YEAR curriculum and pass the JUPEB tests will be granted Direct Entry admission to 200 Level Degree programs at Achievers University and other universities in Nigeria. Achievers University conducts comprehensive lessons in appropriate subject combinations in accordance with the JUPEB syllabus through highly skilled tutors in the following subject combinations: - BCP – Biology/Chemistry/Physics

Opportunities for Nigerian students to gain admission to various American universities have opened up recently.
The 21st annual Education USA College and Career Fair was held on Thursday in Lagos by the American Embassy in Nigeria.
Attendees included university representatives from Iowa, New York, Kentucky, and California. The event took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.
In an interactive session with undergraduates, graduates, and parents at the study fair, the U.S. representatives discussed the various opportunities, visa application procedures, alluring scholarships, chances for career advancement, and funding in the U.S.
According to Chinenye Uwadileke, the U.S. education adviser, students applying to US universities will be given fully funded scholarships and scholarships worth as little as $5,000.
There are about 25 universities in the United States; some offer graduate and undergraduate programs. We hope to increase the number of students from 13,000 to 16,000,” she said.
The opportunity to study full-time and work 20 hours per week on campus is available to students in the United States, she continued.
Adnan Siddiqi, a public affairs counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, explained the visa application procedure and stated that before continuing, students must be accepted into the university of their choice.
“The idea behind the student visa is that you must return to your home country after receiving your degree. The number of years you can stay in the United States on a student visa is extremely constrained, he explained.
Will Stevens, the general consul of the United States, recognizes parents’ efforts in supporting their children’s education.
The majority of African students in the United States, he noted, are from Nigeria. “Over 13,000 Nigerian students are in the US,” he said, adding that more interviews for Nigerians looking to study in the US were conducted after COVID.
Student village reports that, according to him, the US wants to establish connections that will help African students and their nations.
“Our relationship will benefit from the time you spent studying in the United States. When you study in the US, you return to Nigeria with collaborators for research, funding, investments, and business ventures, the speaker said.
“In my opinion, when we discuss the 21st century, we are discussing how to position Africa for every opportunity. You are essential to ensuring the success of our partnership.
Mr. Osodeke’s comments, according to KASU spokesman Adamu Bargo, were “irresponsible, unguarded, misleading, and derogatory.”
The authorities of Kaduna State University (KASU) and Kwara State University (KWASU) have rejected ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke’s comments that some universities that have not joined the ongoing strike are “quacks” and “irrelevant.”
Mr Osodeke, a professor, made the comment during a live interview on Thursday, August 26, where he maintained that reputable institutions were involved in the industrial action called for the revitalization of the university system.
“So don’t bring up those examples.” They are irrelevant,” Mr Osodeke told interviewers, pointing out that KWASU and other institutions are not participating in the ASUU strike.
“Is there a strike at the University of Ibadan?” Is there a strike at UNN? Is there a strike at ABU? Is the BUK on strike? Is the Maiduguri University on strike? Let us discuss important universities rather than quacks.” The leader of the lecturers’ labor union retorted.
In an angry rebuttal, Adamu Bargo, a KASU spokesman, called Mr Osodeke’s remarks “irresponsible, unguarded, misleading, and derogatory.”
Mr Bargo insisted that KASU was a new-generation state-owned university founded 18 years ago on the “ethical determination” of its founding fathers to maintain higher academic standards.
“KASU is home to the world’s fourth best polymer chemist, and our lecturers have received grants both locally and internationally and are highly regarded.”
“KASU graduates are rated among the best in the world and are receiving scholarships from all over the country and the world,” Mr. Bargo said in a statement.
“KASU has ASUU members, and it is unfortunate that the union’s President calls them quacks while collecting monthly check-off fees from their salaries.”
“Doesn’t this provide good reason for every reasonable academic staff member at the University to withdraw from the Union because of this labeling and stereotyping?”
Similarly, KWASU administration took issue with the ASUU president’s remarks. According to Saeedat Aliyu, the university’s spokesperson, the institution was founded on the vision of advancing the frontiers of knowledge for the good of society and is not a quack.
“KWASU Management regards these statements as unworthy of an academic of Prof. Osodeke’s alleged status,” said a KWASU spokesperson.
Ms Aliyu described the labor leader’s remarks as “bullying, reckless, uncalled for, and a denigration of the status he occupies as national head of the Nigerian Union of Academic Staff.”
“We are the only university in Nigeria going green in her thinking and activities as proactive measures to save the environment,” the image maker said of the Malete-based institution.
KWASU is “the first institution in Nigeria to mount Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering as a forward-thinking move to develop human capacity for the nation’s aeronautic and astronautic needs,” she added.
Ms Aliyu, therefore, demanded that Mr. Osodeke retract his “abominable” statement and issue an immediate public apology to KWASU.
Most Nigerian public universities have been closed since February 24, when the national leadership of ASUU declared a strike in response to the government’s failure to implement a 2009 agreement reached with the union.
An attempt to reach an agreement fell through last week when union and government representatives failed to shift ground on their demands, particularly on payment of salaries during the strike period.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPSThe Presidential Purple and Gold award was established to recognize dedicated students for their commitment to academic excellence. Presidential: having a bearing or demeanor befitting of a president (i.e. dignified and confident). Scholarships are awarded to applicants at the time of admission to UW-Stevens Point, main campus. Presidential Scholarships are automatic awards (no separate application required) for incoming fall 2023 first-year students (while funding is available).

Pratt International Students Scholarships, USA
Pratt offers undergraduate students various types of scholarships: a generous program of merit-based scholarships and restricted and endowed scholarships, as well as a variety of other special scholarships listed below under Additional Scholarships. In addition, need-based grants (gift) are added to the package to make the cost of attendance more affordable for more families.

In considering colleges, it is important to understand whether the schools you are looking at award merit scholarships in addition to need-based aid. Presidential Merit-Based Scholarships
NOTE: Pratt is test optional. As a result, merit scholarships for high school applicants are based on GPA and portfolio only for all programs including architecture. Construction Management is based on GPA only as the program does not require a portfolio. Note that for architecture applicants who waive the portfolio requirement scholarships will be based on GPA and test scores.
The Presidential Merit-based scholarships are awarded upon acceptance by the admissions office according to a carefully developed program. Transfer scholarships are based on portfolio and college GPA. All college transcripts are included in the calculation. Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.5 GPA to renew their scholarships each year. No separate scholarship application is required for consideration.

National Scholastic Scholarships
Pratt Institute recognizes The Scholastic Art Awards program of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers as an appropriate and effective way for students interested in art and design to develop successful portfolios for college admission. Pratt reserves scholarships for qualified national awards recipients who independently and successfully apply to Pratt. These awards are in addition to any other merit scholarships the student has received from Pratt and are awarded for Scholastic awards in the senior year only. Pratt will award the following:
- Portfolio Gold Award Recipients in General Art or Photography: $3,000/year for four years
- Portfolio Silver Award Recipients in General Art or Photography: $2,000 a year for four years
- Gold Award Recipients Individual works: $1,000 a year for four years

International scholarships
International students are eligible for our international merit-based scholarships. International students do not qualify for need-based aid. There is no application for the merit-based scholarships awarded to incoming students, and all accepted applicants are considered automatically. To qualify for merit-based scholarships, you are not required to submit a FAFSA.

Scholarships for Students Transferring from Pratt’s AAS program to the BFA

Merit scholarships are based on the student’s cumulative GPA in the associate’s program (AAS transfer-track program only) including the fall term of second year. PrattMWP Relocation Scholarships
Merit scholarships are based on the student’s cumulative GPA at PrattMWP including the fall term of second year. Brooklyn students who transfer to PrattMWP will be considered for scholarships when they return to Pratt in Brooklyn based on their cumulative GPA from their first year at Pratt and their first semester of their second year at PrattMWP. Students who submit the FAFSA will also be considered for need-based aid.

Restricted and Endowed Scholarships
These scholarships and grants are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need. There are no special financial aid forms for Restricted and Endowed Scholarships, although departmental applications may be required. Recipients are selected by deans or department chairpersons based on criteria established by the donors. These awards are made for one year only and are based on the availability of funds in any given year. A list of these scholarships is available in pdf form below.

STEM Scholarships for Latin American students
This scholarship is open for commencing Latin American international students undertaking a select program at RMIT’s STEM College, providing financial assistance towards the first year of study.
Value and duration
The total value of the scholarship is AU$10,000, one-off payment towards future tuition fee to be paid after the first census date.

Three (3) scholarships are available for semester 1 or 2, 2023.
Eligibility
To qualify for this scholarship, you must:
- be a citizen of Latin America countries
- applying from Latin America countries
- be an international student holding a valid student visa or plan to apply for a student visa prior to the program commencement
- not be an existing RMIT University student
- achieve an overall 70% average or equivalent in your last completed qualification

- Applicants with ELICOS packaged offer are eligible, however they must commence their Vocational Education, Bachelor or Master by coursework program in Semester 1 or 2, 2023.

- This scholarship cannot be deferred.
- The value of your scholarship is based on full-time 48 credit points enrolment load in your first semester, which will be adjusted accordingly if your enrolment load is reduced.

The Hungarian Deputy State Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians through the Tempus Public Foundation are offering scholarships available for bachelor, master and one-tier master programmes.
Application Deadline: 19th March 2018 (23:59 Budapest time).

Eligible Countries: For the 2018/2019 academic year the scholarship is announced for the citizens of following countries: Egypt, Lebanese Republic, Republic of Iraq, State of Israel, Palestine, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Syrian Arab Republic, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and Nigeria.

About the Award: The core mission of the Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People is to provide the possibility of studying in Hungary for young Christian students living in the crisis regions of the world and/or being threatened in their country because of their faith.
After completing their studies, the scholarship holders will return to help their home community with their gained knowledge, and thy will participate in the reconstruction of war-destroyed countries and contribute to improvement of social situation and preservation of culture of Christian communities.
Type: Bachelor, Masters
Eligibility: The Scholarship Programme is based on the cooperation between the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary and churches, pursuing humanitarian activities in crisis regions.
The applicants may not have Hungarian citizenship.
Local Churches are to verify and prove that the applicant belongs to their religious community. Only those applications can be awarded with scholarship, which also possess the recommendation from the local Church along with the approval of the Deputy State Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians.
Scholarship holders must possess the relevant language and education certificates, degrees requested by the host university of the selected degree programme.

While N348million will go to 500 indigent students, N60.5million will be given in scholarships to 100 students with 4.5 and above GPA.
The association also listed some prominent Nigerians including Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu for awards. The chairman of the association, Dr Lukman Adeoti, stated this during a press briefing heralding the AGM/Annual alumni week of the association held at the Afe Babalola auditorium, University of Lagos, Akoka, recently.
Dr Adeoti while rolling out the achievements of the association, stated that the group has secured 10 hectares of land at Owode, Obafemi, Ogun State and will continue to support students at various levels in order to achieve academic excellence.
He thanked governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his support while also calling on well meaning Nigerians to identify with its programmes tagged ‘Support Our University Projects’, SOUP such as Indigent Students and scholarship awards; Academic Excellence and Professional project where the association organises seminars to help under-achievers students in Third Class and probation as well as Skill Acquisition Training/Entrepreneurial development programme. As part of the week-long activities, Special Jumaat Prayers will be held at the university Central Mosque today while special Thanksgiving has been slated for Sunday at the UNILAG Chapel.
The event will climax on Sunday with the AGM, election of new officers and Award night. -Prominent among the awardees are Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, Vice Chancellor of the institution who will be honoured with Distinguished University Administrator Award; Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale, Chairman, All Progressive Congress, APC, Lagos, will be receiving Distinguished Democratic Leadership Award; Babatunde Fowler, Chairman Tax Board will be given Tax Legend Award; Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, for Innovation in Information and Communication Skill Award; the chairman Police Service Commission, Dr. Mike Okiro among many other distinguished Nigerians

The Estonian Government through the Estonian Institutions are offering Scholarship Opportunities to International students who are willing to pursue an Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree program at any Estonian Institution.
