UNN lecturer Throws Stone At Students Out Of Annoyance
A 100-level student of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State, has been hospitalized after one of her lecturers, Mr. Ukwueze Ogochukwu allegedly broke her head with a stone.
A stone was reportedly thrown at a group of students by a lecturer from the faculty of humanities, and tragically, it struck the first-year student known only as Blessing.
On Monday, February 13, the professor whose session concluded at around 7:00 am reportedly tossed the stone at the students when he spotted them scurrying to sign his attendance sheet out of frustration.
Blessing’s head began to bleed heavily when the stone struck her. She allegedly briefly blacked out before being taken to the school’s medical center.
Blessing could be seen being taken away in a bike in one of the films that were uploaded online. She could be seen in another video clearly in pain as she laid in a hospital bed.
Her colleagues swarmed the administrative office after the incident to complain and demand the lecturer’s immediate firing.

UNICAL suspends 4 students over ‘water ritual’; The University of Calabar has suspended four students after a viral video shared online recorded the students engaging in a “water ritual” on a fellow female student.
According to a press release released by Mr. Gabriel Egbe, Registrar of the college, on Saturday, January 7, the unlawful act was committed by students during the institution’s final matriculation ceremony on December 2, 2022.
The perpetrators were shown in the video throwing buckets of water on the first-year student, who was plainly distressed and fighting to break free from the practice. Outrage as Lagos lawyer is killed by a policeman on Christmas day
On Christmas Day, a gun-happy Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) fatally shot a female lawyer from Lagos named Bolanle Raheem in the Ajah region of the state, shocking and infuriating Nigerians on social media.
Ajah Police Station’s nameless officer and his colleagues allegedly attempted to halt Raheem and her family as they were traveling back home from a Christmas Day church service.
According to reports, Raheem was shot when the vehicle she was riding in attempted to perform a U-turn beneath the Ajah Bridge.
The patient was transported to a hospital but was later declared dead.
Police: Avoidable Incident
Assuring the public that justice will be served, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the occurrence but called it “unfortunate and unnecessary.”
On Monday, Hundeyin wrote, “The ASP who shot and two others accompanying him have since been brought into prison.”
He added that the police officers would be transferred to Panti’s State Criminal Investigation Department for additional inquiry.
“The Lagos State Police Command extends its condolences to the Barrister Bolanle Raheem’s family, friends, and coworkers. Since yesterday, the family and the Nigerian Bar Association have been in contact with CP Abiodun Alabi, the commissioner of police for the Lagos State Command, who has assured them firmly that justice will unquestionably prevail.
IGP Orders Speedy Investigation after Condemning Killing
Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), denounced Raheem’s shooting and death on Monday.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement that the IGP, who called the situation tragic and sad, ordered a prompt inquiry and prosecution of the officers responsible for the obscene and unprofessional behaviour.
The IGP claimed that the behavior does not reflect the basic principles and SOP of the Nigerian Police.
In a similar vein, the IGP expresses his sympathy to the deceased’s family, friends, and coworkers while praying for the peace of her soul.
“He further assures the general public of justice in the case while he warns officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties and operate within the ambit of the law, as the Force’s leadership will not condone any inappropriate or unprofessional acts,” the statement read.
NBA Demands Justice
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has additionally requested that justice be done in this case.

“A Nigerian Police Officer from Ajiwe division shot and killed Bolanle Raheem on Xmas day. It is from this same division an Officer killed Gafaru Buraimoh about 2 weeks ago,” he wrote.
“This barbarism by the Nigerian Police must come to an end. These murderers must pay for their crimes!”
Prominent human rights activist and a former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu also lent his voice to condemn the killing of Raheem.
Another activist, Rinu Oduala slammed Nigeria Police Force for alleged coverup of the identity of the trigger-happy policeman.
Concerning incidents of extrajudicial executions by police officers and other security personnel have occurred over time. According to a report published in 2021 by the Centre for Democracy and Development, a human rights organization, over 13,000 Nigerians were executed extrajudicially by security personnel in the previous ten years.

But one of the greatest writers of all time has provided some of the best advice you’ll ever find.
These are George Orwell’s Six Rules for Writing, which were first presented in 1946 and are still relevant today:
George Orwell was much more than just a novelist, despite the fact that 1984 is his most well-known work.
The best English essayist of the 20th century, he was also.
Even though 1984 and Animal Farm are excellent books, Orwell’s journalism is where he really shines.
He expressed himself with a profound clarity that has stood the test of time in his writing. Nearly 80 years after his passing, Orwell’s words are still relevant.
He identified the following as the issue with writing in his own time: using *other people’s* words.
What has changed?
In “Politics and the English Language”, published in 1946, Orwell laid down six rules for writing.Here’s a general point from that essay, one which summaries Orwell’s position: that good writing requires you to think about your words.
Some of the best advice you’ll ever read:
Rule #1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.Orwell is talking about *dying* metaphors here, not ones which have already lost their original meaning.
An example of that is “deadline”, which originally referred to the physical line around a prison which, if a prisoner crossed it, would result in that prisoner being shot.Deadline has lost such imagery. It’s no longer a metaphor. It has a literal meaning. That’s fine.
The problem with *dying* metaphors is that they haven’t become literal yet.But by being overused their imagery turns stale. They lose all “evocative power”, as Orwell says.
An example is something like “Achilles’ heel”.
Using these dying metaphors is lazy. It shows that the writer neither cares about the vividness of their language nor the accuracy of what they are actually saying.Why use somebody else’s fading imagery when you can invent your own & stimulate your reader’s imagination?
This is a constant theme in Orwell’s advice: that using phrases created by *other people* is one of the worst things a writer can do.That, by so doing, a writer (or speaker) becomes a mere machine of regurgitation, hardly even conscious of what they actually think.
Rule #2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.A wonderfully Hemingway-esque bit of advice, one which needs little explanation; it all goes back to clarity.
However, Orwell offers some additional, less obvious advice which falls under this rule.
Because this goes beyond the difference between short and long words; it’s about whether words actually mean anything.He explains the problem here, using the example of art criticism, where abstract words – which are conceputal & lack concrete meaning – are frightfully common:
Orwell was passionate about the proper use of language; he was concerned about the way politicians abused words to the point that they became meaningless.This passage feels like it could have been written in 2022. But what is Orwell’s point? Use words that have a clear meaning.
Rule #3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.You see this writing tip all the time online. And it’s sound advice. But Orwell’s point is a little more perceptive.
He gives some great examples of *how* to cut unnecessary words out.
Orwell calls them “false verbal limbs.”They’re temping because it’s easier than reducing your meaning to the fewest words possible, and because it can make your sentences look prettier or sound nicer.
But you can – and should – cut them out. Then replace them with a short, simple word.It requires effort, but if you do it, your meaning will immediately become clearer. And your audience will thank you.
Don’t turn a verb into a whole phrase.
Rule #4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.The active voice is:
a) more direct – and therefore clearer
b) requires fewer words – and therefore clearerThe window was broken by me. (passive)
or
I broke the window. (active)Easy choice.
Rule #5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.(Some of the examples Orwell gives have now entered everyday language, but his broader point still stands.)
Why would you *ever* use a word your reader might not understand, unless it is absolutely necessary?That’s the first point Orwell is making.
And the second is that these “pretentious” words disguise your actual intended meaning beneath a heap of verbal nonsense.
Not only will your reader fail to understand your point, but you as a writer probably won’t know what you’re trying to say, either.And so you’ll reach for ready-made phrases, abstract words, and images which aren’t *yours* – the result will be using other people’s ideas, too.
Rule #6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.This is by far the most interesting rule, and speaks to the integrity of Orwell’s character.
It’s an appeal to morality over effectiveness. If you only remember one rule, make it this one.
So they’re the six rules.And here is an example Orwell gives of how *not* to write. Something he read in a newspaper.
You have to read it three times to understand just half of what the writer is trying to say.
And here Orwell “translates” something into bad writing.He picks a famous verse from the Book of Ecclesiastes.
What’s the real problem with bad writing?It goes back to Orwell’s central gripe.
You’ll end up using other people’s language, and the consequence is that you’ll end up using their thoughts too. What could be worse than that?
Orwell’s brilliance stemmed from his clarity.Few writers have ever achieved such a vivid, direct, memorable, and effective style.
And that’s why he is so well regarded. Orwell’s words speak directly to us, despite being nearly a century old, because of his precision.
Politics and the English Language is one of the all-time great essays about writing; it’s worth reading in full.Of course, Orwell wasn’t correct about everything, and there’s no single way to write well. But his advice isn’t a bad place to start…

10. People reveal their actual colors more often than they reveal them.
11. You’ll never regret spending time with your children, even if it means staying up late to work after they’ve gone to bed.
12. Teach your children what you wish your father had taught you.
13. Don’t invite folks into your inner circle who moan.
14. Be wary of passing judgment on others; remember, you’ve never walked in their shoes.
15. Money addresses some problems while exacerbating others.
16. Stop breathing through your mouth. You have a nose for a reason.
17. Health isn’t about macronutrients. Health is a way of life.
18. Your children may take up on your bad habits. Make your worst habits superior to the majority of people’s good habits.
19. Someone who claims to have “all the answers” is untrustworthy.
20. Your best ideas emerge when you’re not attempting to think of them.
21. Your memory is terrible. Make a list of items you wish to remember.
22. Eggs are nature’s nutritional supplement. Consume them.
23. When you first get up, drink 32oz of water to flush your system.
24. Discipline will get you 100 times further than motivation.
25. Never put your family above your job. Never.
26. Your life would be ten times better if you just did what you know you should do.
27. Constantly seek discomfort. Only when you are uncomfortable do you grow.

You do not have any friends. They’re obviously talking behind your back about you.34. How someone treats service personnel might reveal a lot about them. Don’t dismiss it.
35. Make sure there is a mind-to-muscle link when lifting weights.
36. Allow yourself to experience your emotions. Feel them completely, then release them.

LASPOTECH shuts down its secondary school indefinitely over a student’s death
The Lagos State University of Science and Technology LASUSTECH, (Formerly, Lagos State Polytechnic LASPOTECH) has announced the indefinite closure of its International Secondary School (LISS), located in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, over the death of a student who was involved in a motor accident.
The student, identified as AbdulRahman Dauda, was allegedly chased to his death by an unnamed class teacher recently. After the incident, the deceased mother was seen in a video staging a lone protest against the school while demanding justice.
In a statement issued on Saturday, November 12, the university’s management noted that the school had been closed due to the unfortunate incident and that the period of closure will be used to restructure and reposition the school.
It further stated that learning has been temporarily moved online while investigations have commenced.
Three staff who were allegedly accused of complicity in the matter have also been remanded at the Nigerian Correctional facility in Lagos.
