Pixel 7 and 7 Pro review: Google weaves its camera magic again

There is no way to sugarcoat it: The camera on the Pixel 7 Pro is the genuine deal, no holds barred. I’ve never had more pleasure using a smartphone to take pictures.
Thanks to its special telescopic lens and macro focus capability, Google’s Pixel 7 Pro can capture your subject flawlessly and without any hassle, whether it’s so far away that it’s literally on another landmass or so near that you can practically taste it. The new Tensor G2 technology that powers the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro cleverly employs software to perform tasks that the tiny smartphone lenses typically cannot.
The Pixel 7 starts at $599 and the Pixel 7 Pro starts at $899 when they both go on sale on October 13.
The two Pixel 7s may be considered a small disappointment because these Android phones are more than just portable cameras. The Pixel 7 series looks a much like the Pixel 6 line on the outside, with the exception of new textures for the camera bar and tweaks to the exterior color schemes.
On the inside, that is also true. The Tensor G2 chip enables a few useful new AI call and voice messaging features, but the usability of these new Google flagships in daily life hasn’t altered significantly. And regrettably, the standard Pixel 7 lacks the best new camera features.
Because the Pixel 6s were excellent smartphones, that incrementalist strategy isn’t the worst thing in the world. The Pixel 7 series is probably not enough of an improvement for those who purchased last year (or earlier this year with the Pixel 6a) to warrant an upgrade. But if you’ve been holding onto an older Pixel—or even want to go from an iPhone to an Android—now might be the time to make the transfer, preferably to the Pixel 7 Pro.
So long, two-tone color scheme
Google largely went with what worked on the Pixels 6 previous time around; there isn’t any Dynamic Island-like innovation on display here. It preserved the recognizable horizontal camera bar, which is located towards the top of the phone’s back and now has a fresh, more metallic appearance. Also nearly identical in size to their Pixel 6 predecessors are the two Pixel 7 smartphones. A tenth of an inch smaller than the Pixel 6, the Pixel 7 measures 6.3 inches, while the Pixel 7 Pro measures 6.7 inches. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro both have smooth refresh rates of 90Hz and 120Hz, respectively, keeping things the same.Having said that, even though I have quite acute eyes for that kind of thing, I can’t say that I really noticed the refresh rate difference after extensively using both phones for a few days. If you can avoid it, avoid making that feature of the 7 Pro a selling point.
Every phone’s body is made of glass from front to back, thus I strongly suggest using a case to protect it. On softer surfaces, both of my Pixel 7s have slipped and fallen, which is annoying.
The removal of the two-tone color scheme that made the Pixel 6 series so instantly recognisable to the general public is really the only significant physical change Google made this year. Each Pixel 6 had slightly distinct colors above and below the camera bar last year, which not only made the device stand out but also drew attention to the lens array. This time, the colors are consistent throughout the entire phone.
Both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro come in obsidian and snow hues, however only the Pixel 7 offers an exclusive lemongrass shade, and the Pixel 7 Pro offers a similar colorway in hazel.
I dig the shiny metal texture of the camera bar on this year’s phones, but I super don’t dig the removal of the two-tone colors. Last year’s Pixels looked fun and quirky whereas this year’s phones just kinda look like…phones.
Thankfully, what the Pixel phones can do is far more important than what they look like.

30x zoom is just a button press away. Credit: Screenshot: GoogleThe rear camera setup on the two new Pixel 7 phones represents the physical difference that is most noticeable. Along with a 50MP wide camera and a 12MP ultra-wide lens on the back, both phones have the identical 10.8MP selfie camera. The Pixel 7 Pro, however, sports a 48MP telephoto lens on the back, much like last year. But unlike the Pixel 6 Pro from a year ago, zooming in extremely on distant subjects has never looked this fantastic.
This time, Google used Tensor magic to increase the maximum zoom length of the Pixel 7 Pro to a stunning 30x. For comparison, the iPhone 14 can only be magnified by 5x, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro can do it by 30x. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 and other recent Android smartphones could both zoom that far, so that last figure alone isn’t very groundbreaking. When you zoom in very closely on a topic, computational improvements take place in the background that yield significantly sharper images than the Galaxy Fold 4 was able to.
To test this, I took a sojourn into Brooklyn’s Domino Park on the East River waterfront, which has a gorgeous view of the Manhattan city skyline. From the pier, you can see One World Trade Center far, far in the distance. It’s about six miles by road, according to Google Maps. Using 30x telephoto zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro, you can see the top of 1WTC clear as day from an entirely different landmass. It’s unbelievable.

The tall building in the center of the photo on the left has something written at the very top, which is nearly impossible to make out unless you press your eyes against the screen. Don’t do that, by the way.
But if we zoom in with the Pixel 7 Pro’s telephoto lens, we can make out the writing (which is sadly just the building’s address) as if we were right next to it. This is simply one of the more remarkable things I’ve seen in a smartphone camera system in a long time. You can take crystal clear photos from miles away using the Pixel 7 Pro.

Credit: Alex Perry/MashableAnother unique function available just on the Pixel 7 Pro is dubbed “Macro Focus.” This is not really novel for smartphones because even entry-level models like the Moto G Stylus 5G from a year ago have macro lenses. The goal is to physically position the phone close to a small subject, like a growing flower, to achieve a sharp, focused photo. The Pixel 7 Pro is far more classy about macro photography than other phones, like the Moto phone, which restricted it to a separate setting in the camera app. Macro focus will begin to automatically when you put the phone close to your subject and use the default camera view at 1x zoom.

The Pixel 7 Pro’s camera array is really one of the best I’ve ever seen in a smartphone and is worth the $300 price hike if you can afford that. Fortunately, it’s not like the regular Pixel 7 is some mediocre camera in its own right. The cheaper Pixel can still hold its own against other great smartphone cameras.
Portrait mode is obviously back and still wonderful. Both Pixel 7 phones can quickly snap great-looking portrait shots while letting you adjust the depth of field effects with some simple sliders in the editing menu. However, I never really felt the need to do that. The shots I took looked excellent right from the jump.

Credit: Alex Perry/MashableGoogle’s trademark Night Sight feature is back, too, and it’s been sped up so the average Night Sight shot now takes just two or three seconds to process. It’s able to bring the finer details out in dark shots without blanketing the frame in what looks like artificial light. In other words, Night Sight doesn’t make nighttime shots look like they were taken during the day. If you want to photograph the seedy urban underbelly of your city at night Michael Mann-style, you can do that.

Just right. Credit: Alex Perry/MashableThe biggest new photography feature that’s exclusive to both Pixel 7 phones is the “photo unblur” tool. It purports to do exactly what the name suggests: take your blurry photos and make something nice out of them. Simply open a photo in the Photos app, tap Edit, and you should see Unblur as one of the available tools. That opens a slider that goes from 0 to 100, with 100 being the sharpest possible image it can produce.
Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting photo unblur to make real, transformative differences to photos I took. It worked great on a prefab photo at Google’s initial hands-on event last week, but under most real-world circumstances, photo unblur made blurry photos only slightly less blurry.
They looked a little better, but I wouldn’t call them social media worthy.

It would be a shame to overlook the exciting features of the zoom lens and macro focus. In no way am I a photographer. Since words are the simplest form of expression for me, I write professionally. However, even with that in mind, I had a great time testing the Pixel 7 camera, especially with the Pro.
Given that it has no macro functions and can only zoom in by 8x, the Pixel 7 wasn’t quite as exciting. But don’t misunderstand; it’s still a fantastic smartphone camera. Simply put, it’s not the best smartphone camera.
More similar than different
Both of these phones have the same functionality aside from the significant variances in the cameras. Although the Pixel 7 only has 8GB of RAM as opposed to the Pixel 7 Pro’s 12GB, I never saw any kind of significant speed loss when switching between the two. The inclusion of a 512GB storage option above the Pixel 7’s 128GB and 256GB variants is the only other notable improvement in terms of features.
Just as the two Pixel 7s are similar to each other, they’re also very similar to the Pixel 6 line in everyday functionality. There are some little new AI-driven features, though. For instance, you can use a newly updated feature called Direct My Call to get an instant graphical UI readout of the automated menu options when you call toll-free 1-800 numbers. Google recommended we try Home Depot, Costco, State Farm, and a couple of other services, and sure enough, a little menu of numbered options immediately popped up, thus negating the need to listen to the automated spiel.

Credit: Screenshot: GoogleAndroid 13 is pre-installed on the Pixel 7 series, but this is nothing new or unexpected given that other Pixel phones began receiving the newest Android code in August. The Pixel 6’s “Material You” interface look has been improved, and the icon and wallpaper color palette has increased from four to sixteen. Press and hold the options you want to look at on your home screen.
Personally, I became disoriented by the sheer number of hues and chose something haphazardly. I mean, my eyes already have color vision issues. Additionally, Android 13 allows you to set several default languages for various apps rather than setting a single language as the default for the entire device, which is a convenient feature for multilingual users.
However, you won’t find anything here that distinguishes the Pixel 7 from the Pixel 6 when it comes to the everyday routine of checking Twitter, listening to Spotify, texting your friends, and anything else that falls under the tried-and-true activity of “looking at your phone instead of doing work.” Both phones operate remarkably quickly thanks to the new Tensor chip, with no performance glitches that I could notice—but that was also true with the Pixel 6 series.
Regarding battery life, I obtained about 26 hours with the Pixel 7 Pro and about 22 hours with the Pixel 7. Both phones had a 24 hour battery life rating, and they both more or less lived up to it.

After six years of producing its own in-house phones, Google knows what it’s doing. And since last year brought a total redesign and a new custom chip, it’s only natural that this year’s Pixel offering is more iterative than revolutionary.
Although that is true, I still believe that if you’ve been using an earlier Pixel or Android phone for a while, the Pixel 7 Pro is a fantastic phone that is well worth an upgrade. It’s all about the cameras; a 30x telephoto lens generates magnificent images, and a macro focus enhances the beauty of even the smallest objects, like raindrops and flowers. The fact that the 7 Pro comes with a little bit extra RAM and storage is only a great bonus.
That’s not to say anything bad about the Pixel 7, which is a great phone in and of itself with performance that can’t be beat and cameras that are miles above average. Simply said, I don’t think it differs enough from the Pixel 6 or even the Pixel 6a to merit an upgrade. The $599 Pixel 7 is undoubtedly more affordable than the $899 Pixel 7 Pro, but if you’re looking for a less expensive but still somewhat new Pixel, opt for the $450 Pixel 6a.

Aim for 400 to 500 calories for your morning meal, and include a source of lean protein, filling fat (eggs, unsweetened Greek yogurt, nuts or nut butters), and fiber (veggies, fruit, or 100% whole grains).
Beginning your day with a blood sugar-stabilizing nutrient blend will aid in weight loss.
4) Eat mindfully
Slowing down to concentrate on the taste, textures, temperature, and aromas of what you’re eating can aid in portion control. But mindful eating also entails paying close attention to what you eat and when you eat it—this can help you identify unnecessary munching moments that you may not realize you’re engaging in throughout the day that are adding extra calories. More importantly, try to avoid eating foods that you did not choose. Mindful eating can assist in shifting control away from external authorities and cues and toward your body’s own inner wisdom. Recognizing where your extra calories are coming from is another step toward making better short and long-term decisions.
5) Eat spicy foods
Spicy foods can actually aid in weight loss. Furthermore, eating hot peppers may aid in slowing down your eating and preventing overeating. You’ll be more aware of when you’re full. Other than hot peppers, ginger and turmeric are excellent choices.
6)Sleep earlier.
There’s a lot of evidence that getting less than the recommended amount of sleep per night — about seven hours — can slow down your metabolism. Chronic sleep deprivation may even alter hunger hormones, and some studies show a link between poor food choices and less sleep. Good sleep also improves alertness, mood, and overall quality of life. So don’t skimp on your zzz’s, and you’ll be rewarded with a competitive advantage when it comes to overall health and weight loss. Begin by increasing bedtime by 15 to 30 minutes; every minute counts!
7)Consume plenty of water.
Sure, drinking plenty of water can help with bloating, but you can (and should!) also consume foods with high water content. Cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, asparagus, grapes, celery, artichokes, pineapple, and cranberries all have diuretic properties that will help you stay full due to their higher fiber content.

Four years later, an Islamic cleric who raped his five-year-old pupil is sentenced to life in prison.
Abdulsalam Salaudeen, an Islamic cleric who raped a five-year-old pupil in Lagos in 2018, has been sentenced to life in prison, ending a four-year wait for justice.
The Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court of Lagos sentenced Salaudeen on Wednesday, according to Mirabel Centre, Nigeria’s first sexual assault referral center.
The court equally ordered Salaudeen’s name to be registered in the state’s sex offenders’ register.
Salaudeen, 43, committed the act at an Arabic school where he worked as an Islamic Studies teacher.
The teacher committed the offence on December 22, 2018, at a mosque premises in Igando, Lagos.
If the incident had not been reported to the police five days later, his actions would have gone unnoticed and unpunished.
A complainant also provided the police with video evidence showing Salaudeen, also known as Alfa, having anal sex with the female pupil while reporting the incident.
Nancy-Olive Tamuno, communications manager at Mirabel Centre, told FIJ, “We hope this marks a change in the justice system and the beginning of harsher punishments for sex offenders.”
“This ruling also gives more survivors hope that they can get justice.
“We also hope this serves as a deterrent to rapists and assaulters. The law will catch up to them and they will be punished.”

He wants the social media site to be ‘politically neutral
Musk has revealed snippets of what he intends to do if he gains control of Twitter, mostly through tweets.
It is still not finalized — Musk and Twitter have been embroiled in months of legal wrangling since he attempted to back out of the deal earlier this summer. Musk, however, reversed course this week and announced on Twitter that he would buy the company for the original offer price of $54.20 per share.
Musk, whose bid earlier this year to buy the social media site shocked observers, had said before the deal was announced that he wanted to promote free speech and open up its algorithm to increase transparency.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO still hasn’t specified exactly what changes he might make to the company’s leadership or when the site could look different to users. But he has tweeted about his ideas for new features and for changes on the site he has called the “de facto town square.”
He said he would reverse the ban on former president Donald Trump
“I think it was a morally bad decision, to be clear, and foolish in the extreme,” he said during a live interview at a Future of the Car event hosted by the Financial Times.
Trump’s account was permanently banned in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Many Republican politicians and right-wing pundits applauded Musk’s plan to buy Twitter, saying he could end “censorship” on the site.
Musk previously denied speaking with Trump, tweeting in response to a media report that he had “no communication, directly or indirectly, with Trump, who has publicly stated that he will be exclusively on Truth Social.”
Trump owns the Twitter clone called Truth Social, which has been foundering in its early months. (Musk suggested in a tweet that the former president should have named his social network “Trumpet.”)
Trump has said that he won’t rejoin Twitter even if he is allowed, though some of his advisers say he wouldn’t be able to stay away.
Musk says Twitter should be ‘politically neutral’
Musk tweeted in May that “Twitter obv has a strong left wing bias.”
But he has also said that “the right will probably be a little unhappy too.”
“A social media platform’s policies are good if the most extreme 10% on left and right are equally unhappy,” he tweeted the week before Twitter agreed to his purchase offer.
Critics of Musk’s plan to buy Twitter have expressed concern that the billionaire would allow extremist views to remain on the site, including accounts that violate existing rules.
Musk responded in April to former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo’s tweet that “bullying is not leadership,” saying he was “just saying Twitter needs to be politically neutral.”
Musk wants to stick to the law
Musk has said many times that he wants Twitter to do a better job promoting free speech. To him, that seems to mean allowing speech that is legal in the specific geographies where Twitter operates.
“Like I said, my preference is to hew close to the laws of countries in which Twitter operates,” he tweeted in May. “If the citizens want something banned, then pass a law to do so, otherwise it should be allowed.”
Tech executives and Silicon Valley insiders have expressed skepticism about Musk’s plans for a largely unpoliced space rid of censorship, saying it is naive and could make the site unsafe.
Musk appeared in a video with E.U. Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton to address the new Digital Services Act, which would require the world’s largest tech companies to more aggressively police their platforms for illegal content.
Musk said the law was aligned with his thinking.
“I agree with everything you said, really,” he told Breton in the video. “I think we’re very much of the same mind.”
Musk wants Twitter to be less ‘niche’
At the Met Gala in New York in May, which Musk attended with his mom, the entrepreneur said the social media site is “sort of niche,” according to Reuters. He wants to get more people on board.
“My goal, assuming everything gets done, would be to make Twitter as inclusive as possible and to have as broad a swath of the country and the rest of the world on Twitter and that they find it interesting and entertaining and funny and that it makes their life better,” he told an interviewer.
That seems to fit with his idea, shared just days after the deal was announced, that Twitter should be enjoyable. “Let’s make Twitter maximum fun!” he posted.
Twitter’s workplace could look different
convinced that a Musk-owned Twitter will be fun. Company employees have expressed concerns that Musk would meaningfully change the firm’s culture and could loosen content moderation, meant to promote safety online, that they have worked hard on for years.
Musk also talked with bankers about potential job cuts at the company. He tweeted this spring that if his deal closes, Twitter would “be super focused on hardcore software engineering, design, infosec & server hardware.”
Employees were taken aback when Musk reversed course on the deal this week and offered to buy the company for the original price. In an internal Slack message described to The Post, one person summed up the mood by saying, “Congrats or I’m sorry y’all.”
Concern about workers quitting grew this spring, especially when the company’s top lawyer faced online attacks after Musk tweeted a meme with a photo of her that cast her as an icon of “Twitter’s left-wing bias.”
At the Met Gala, Musk said, “It’s a free country,” according to Reuters.
“Certainly if anyone doesn’t feel comfortable with that, they will on their own accord go somewhere else,” he said.
Musk’s other companies are known for workplaces with long hours and high expectations. Musk, who hasn’t said whether he plans to serve as an executive at Twitter, tweeted that “work ethic expectations would be extreme, but much less than I demand of myself.”
Some accounts might need to pay up
Musk has shared a few details of features he might tweak on Twitter, including expressing support for an edit button. He also tweeted that Twitter will stay free for most users but that there might someday be “a slight cost for commercial/government users.”
Twitter is used by many politicians, companies, government agencies and other officials to share updates in real time.
Musk has also said he wants to make the company’s algorithm, or its computer code, public to promote transparency. That’s easier said than done, experts say.
He called for Twitter direct messages, which are private, to be end-to-end encrypted so they are more secure and “so no one can spy on or hack your messages.”

‘The Woman King’ is set in the 1820s in the West African kingdom of Dahomey, now known as the Republic of Benin.
It tells the story of the Agojie, an all-female warrior group who defends the kingdom. They are fierce, sworn to celibacy, and no man is permitted on their training grounds.
When the Agojie liberates prisoners from the Oyo army, the scene sets the tone for what follows.
During that time, Dahomey’s ninth ruler, the new King Ghezo, attempts to see things from a different perspective.
His kingdom has a tributary agreement with the powerful Oyo Empire. The contract includes the use of the Ouidah Port as a slave route.
“The slave trade is the reason we prosper,” the king says, “but at what cost?”
The kingdom is torn between paying the tribute, which is accompanied by a heavy trade tax, and refusing to pay, which is a declaration of war.
General Nanisca, the leader of the Agojie, is tasked with training a new generation of warriors to fight against an enemy in order to raise an army strong enough to dare the Oyo army.
Nawi, a 19-year-old girl, refuses to conform to culture by marrying as a child. As a result, her father hands her over to the Agojie. She is taken to the palace of women, where men are not permitted.
Her presence in the army alters the course of events in the upcoming war.
REVIEW
Few historical films portray the exploits of the black race in a positive light during the pre- and colonial eras.
This idea is mirrored in ‘The Woman King.’ The film is a rare opportunity to shed light on Africans’ collaboration in one of humanity’s darkest tragedies: the slave trade.
King Ghezo sought to abolish slavery in favor of the palm oil trade. Members of his court explicitly told him, “no one fears a peasant ruler.”
It also subtly emphasizes the existing civilisation at the time. The fact that Europeans, Portuguese, and other slave traders encountered well-planned cities, the current system of governance, and, of course, an almost impregnable army when they arrived on African shores is rarely discussed.
“I wish for my people to prosper as those of your land do,” King Ghezo tells the Portuguese who have come to do business. We are well aware that you regard us as a commodity.”
Another plus for the film is the use of a genuine Nigerian, or African, accent.
CASTING
The casting of Viola Davis as General Nanisca may lead viewers to believe she is of African descent. It’s not surprising, given her status as a Hollywood veteran.
Other cast members, such as Thuso Mbedu (South Africa) and Sheila Atim (Uganda), provided a balance that is often lacking in similar films.
For the Nigerian audience, however, John Boyega and Jimmy Odukoya were the cherry on top.
Odukoya plays Oba, the leader of the Oyo army, while Boyega plays the king.
Both roles were crucial to the film’s direction, and their performances sold the film’s various themes.
One example would be the heated debate both characters had in the marketplace about their loyalty to the Oyo empire.
BACKGROUND
The Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey, are the inspiration for ‘The Woman King.’
They were of the Fon ethnic group and lived from the 1600s to 1904.
Dahomey, in West Africa, was a thriving kingdom during the 17th century.
Dahomey was a significant regional power with a well-organized domestic economy based on conquest and slave labor.
The kingdom lost its tributary status to the Oyo Empire in the nineteenth century.
After more than a half-century of French rule, it gained independence in 1960.
It was renamed the People’s Republic of Benin in 1975, and the Republic of Benin in 1990.
In conclusion, I give this movie; The Woman Kinga 9/10. Its even more interesting than black panther and every single person that worked on this movie definitely put in more than their best.

The precise amount of sleep required varies from person to person, but most adults should aim for 8 hours.
3) Exercise regularly: Exercise not only strengthens your body, but it also helps you deal with stress. This is due to the fact that exercise causes the body to produce endorphins, which make us feel happier! They also aid in the reduction of cortisol levels in the body, which is the stress hormone. Regular, moderate exercise is one of the most beneficial things you can do for both your physical and mental health.
According to research, half an hour of moderate exercise per day boosts your immune system and improves your circulation. This makes it easier for immune-boosting T cells to travel around the body and reach infection-fighting sites.
4) Wash your hands: In recent months, we’ve all become more accustomed to practicing good hand hygiene. Because we use our hands to touch and hold things, they are a major source of germ transmission. Hand washing on a regular basis can help to reduce the spread of viruses and bacteria.
Using antibacterial soap or handwash is a great idea, as is washing for at least 20 seconds in hot water. Alcohol hand gels can also be useful, especially in situations where running warm water is difficult to obtain.
5) Limit alcohol intake: Too much alcohol has a negative impact on your immune system. This is due to the fact that alcohol is a toxin. Two Nigerian ‘Cultists’ Arrested in South Africa for Cybercrime
On Wednesday, Interpol and the Hawks, South Africa’s priority crimes investigative unit, arrested two unidentified Nigerians for cybercrime-related offenses in Pretoria.
The Nigerians, aged 39 and 42, are alleged to be linked to syndicates operating sophisticated cybercrime networks, according to TimesLIVE, a South African online newspaper.
The two Nigerians are also said to be members of the Air Lords, a rival confraternity of South Africa’s Black Axe movement.
“The joint team’s search and seizure operation in Wapadrand and Sunnyside recovered electronic equipment, including laptops and phones, thousands of rand in cash, and an unlicensed firearm,” Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said in a statement.
“The two foreign nationals are said to be members of the cult known as the ‘Air Lords,’ who are rivals of the ‘Black Axe’ movement.” Interpol will charge, detain, and extradite the suspects.
“The suspects will be linked to online scams that the 419 provincial task team is investigating.” This arrest is one of several that have occurred concurrently in other countries in order to track down suspects involved in online scams such as romance, investments, Bitcoin, employment, and related advance fee fraud.
Mogale added that the arrested suspects would appear in court soon on charges of wire fraud conspiracy, access device fraud conspiracy, fraud conspiracy, and money laundering schemes.
One of the suspects will also be charged with illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.
The Nigerians are also likely to join the growing list of Nigerian organized crime members who have been arrested and later extradited to the United States of America on business e-mail compromise and romance scam charges.

King Charles I, II, and III: The history of a controversial name
King Philip, Arthur, or George could have been the new monarch of Britain. Charles was the least bad choice, which is why he supported him.
Confusion over the new King’s name briefly ruled as he took the throne.
In the historic tweet from the Royal Family account that announced Queen Elizabeth II’s passing before any newscasts, the royal formerly known as Prince Charles was referred to as simply “the King” for the first time. There was established continuity.
But what precisely is King? And why did some royal watchers believe Charles wouldn’t be it?
In his inaugural speech, the new ruler avoided saying his name. It was left to Prime Minister Liz Truss to give us our first introduction to King Charles III. (Well, first time if you exclude Scotland in the 18th century, but we’ll get to that.)
Truss being new in the role, and a politician who has had strained relationships with the truth and the law, the matter was in doubt. Not until the BBC confirmed it with Charles’ staff at Clarence House did the world’s media agree. King Charles III it was.
How could it have been any other way? Let’s take a look back in time to find the solution. First, let’s jump back to 2005 when there was a brief Christmastime media frenzy alleging that Charles was considering succeeding King George VII in the future.
Name-swapping was now rationally possible. Charles Philip Arthur George is his full name. Any one of those names could have accompanied him to the throne. like his great-uncle David, who made the decision to serve as Edward VIII for a short time. Or his grandfather Bertie, who ascended to the throne as George VI at the time David reverted to his original name.
Even as Clarence House strenuously denied those conversations had happened in 2005, it issued this statement: “No decision has been made, and it will be made at the time.” The door was left open to a name change many years hence. And to take them at their word, the new King simply decided to become Charles III in Balmoral Castle on the afternoon of Sept. 8, 2022.
So what of the other contenders: King Philip, King Arthur, or King George? Why did they not get the rose? We do not and may never know the King’s thinking, but based on the royal history drilled into him from birth, we can guess: Charles, the name of the only English king ever to be tried and executed, was a bad option for optics. But it was still the best, barely, of a really bad bunch of optics options.
Arthur and the Armada
Philip was unworkable. Philip of Greece was Charles’ father’s name, indeed, but he was merely a prince (and prince consort). The last time a King Philip visited England was in the 16th century, when Queen “Bloody” Mary and Philip II of Spain shared official control of the nation. In addition to leaving Mary behind, Philip made an attempt to seize the country from her sister Elizabeth when she passed away. Charles is planning to replace loving Liz the Second with a King Philip after adored Liz the First defeated Philip’s Armada? Unthinkable.
Arthur, King! There’s a name to conjure with right there. This is the one you would pick if you believed that the British monarchy was doomed to fail in any case and you might be the last person to rule (in at least 14 Commonwealth realms). Naturally, in the age of social media, you’d have to embrace the memes to make it work: have all meetings take place at round tables, name a court magician, create golden Excaliburs out of rocks and donate them to charity, etc.
Sadly, Charles is too mature and wise at 73 to play the part of a contemporary myth. (As for the legend, there isn’t much evidence that he actually existed, thus Charles would have to be referred to as the first recognized King Arthur. Discuss the vast boots to fill.)
So why George not? Even after Buckingham Palace was attacked during the Blitz, George VI remained in London, inspiring the populace and growing to become a national treasure. He battled stuttering. He was portrayed by Colin Firth in the film. Perhaps his grandson can’t fill these enormous legendary voids. Another possibility is that Charles is aware of all the other Georges.
They can be seen if you take a brief trip in our time machine: George I was an average German prince who did not speak English. George II is primarily renowned for the brutality with which his army treated the Scots (for which God Save the King was composed). George III lost both his faculties and the American colonies. Known as the Prince Regent during his father’s insanity, George IV is noted as a brainless scion of privilege (as played by Hugh Laurie, above, in Blackadder). He was pretty much treated that way by society at the time.
“When from the Earth the Fourth descended,” wrote a Victorian poet, “God be praised, the Georges ended.” Except they didn’t. Just a long break for Victoria, a decade’s worth of Edward — and then two more Georges, each one bringing a World War in his wake (with another Edward, who turned out to be a Nazi sympathizer, sandwiched between them.) Let’s not even get started on George V, the consummate Imperial, and owner of what is easily the scariest mustache in royal history.

Something else that may have changed Charles’ thinking since 2005: there’ll be another George along in a couple of Kings’ time anyway (pending the continuation of the monarchy, Prince George of Cambridge and Cornwall is now second in line). And so the choice turned out to be no choice. Here he is, saddled with the same name as the headless King, the King of many mistresses, and the King who wasn’t one.
As we exit the Elizabethan era and blink in the dawn of a new Carolinian age (that’s how you call it, get used to it), it’s time to get our knowledge of the Charles prequels up to speed.
Charles I (1625-1649)

Credit: Universal History Archive / ShutterstockMost interesting thing: To quote Monty Python, “the most interesting thing about King Charles the First is that he was 5 foot 6 inches tall at the start of his reign, but only 4 foot 8 inches tall at the end of it.” Charles lost his head at the end of not one but two Civil Wars that upended everything about England in the 1640s.
His crime? According to a court appointed by Parliament, “tyranny”; believing in the divine right of monarchs to be assholes, basically. Charles thought he could rule without Parliament, or only assemble one when he needed the money. He was also suspected of Catholic sympathies at a time when the country was very Protestant, bustling with Puritans and Quakers and a bunch of new sects and utopian cults.
But yeah, mainly the tyranny.

The Speaker of the House had the door barred, and if you’ve ever seen the annual ritual of the Queen’s (soon to be King’s) Speech, where an official known as Black Rod has the door to the House of Commons ceremonially slammed in their face, this is what it signals: Love you, monarch, but we did not come to play.
How the Civil War was won: Parliament controlled the military. A Cambridgeshire MP named Oliver Cromwell helped build and command a terrifyingly effective New Model Army. The other army that rallied to the King’s banner, mostly Scots and Cavaliers, held plenty of strongholds like Oxford, but wasn’t so great on the battlefield. After Charles was captured and killed, many Cavaliers fled to America, often to the Carolinas, so named for their King. Sorry, America.
What happened next: Cromwell became a tyrant himself, which is perhaps what you should expect when Parliament gives you the title “Lord Protector”. He’d already purged MPs deemed too loyal to the King, leaving the so-called Rump Parliament. Then, years into a Protectorate that was content to massacre the Scots and Irish, while issuing Puritanical orders like the banning of Christmas, Cromwell dissolved the Rump. After he died his son Richard became Lord Protector, making a mockery of that whole “we’re republicans, really!” thing. But Richard knew he was no leader, and resigned inside six months.
After all of that, a hurriedly reconstituted Parliament voted to dissolve itself and call elections. And the resulting Parliament, about half of them royalists, voted to call in the emergency backup Charles.
Charles II (1660-1685)
The last time a King Charles was crowned — in 1660. Credit: Universal History Archive / ShutterstockWait, where did he come from? Surprise! Charles I and his wife, the French Catholic Henrietta Maria, had a bunch of kids. Charles II was the strapping young heir. Age 20, he was defeated on the battlefield by Cromwell, disguised himself and hid out in an oak tree, was crowned King of Scotland in exile, decided he didn’t like the Scots after all, and fled again to Europe. After a few more ditched invasions, he made nice noises to Parliament about religious tolerance and a general amnesty for the whole Civil War. That was enough to restore the monarchy.
Did he follow through? Mostly. There were a few people who’d signed dad’s death warrant who got literally hung, drawn and quartered. Cromwell was exhumed and his head stuck on a pike. Charles didn’t come to play either.
Meanwhile, religious tolerance turned out to work both ways, with Charles pushing pro-Catholic policies and secretly promising to convert to Catholicism. When his brother James turned out to have secretly converted himself, it kicked off a constitutional crisis and an explosion of conspiracy theories. Parliament kept trying to pass an act that would exclude Catholics from the throne, but Charles wouldn’t sign. He ended up dissolving Parliament and ruling on his own, but was more popular and charismatic than his dad, so made it to his grave (age 54, thanks to kidney disease) without being beheaded.
Most interesting thing: The second Carolinian was packed with high drama such as the plague and Great Fire of London, but also new heights of human achievement. Charles freaking loved science and founded the Royal Society, featuring a young Isaac Newton. Christopher Wren built St. Paul’s Cathedral and many more stunning buildings. No longer held back by puritanism, plays (now with women on the stage!), music and the arts flourished.
And yet! It isn’t for this that Charles II is remembered so much as his 12-plus illegitimate children spawned with at least seven mistresses. His Queen, Catherine, who suffered three miscarriages, had to watch Charles shower the mistresses and their kids with wealth and titles, and was even forced to have one work in her bedchamber. (To add horror to insult, the Catholic Catherine was repeatedly threatened and targeted by those conspiracy theorists.)
In the past, this has earned Charles II knowing winks from historians who called him the “merry monarch” and “playboy King.” These days, we’re much more likely to see things from Catherine’s perspective. So if Charles III seeks reflected glory from Charles II, he’d best be careful about standing too close.
Unless we’re talking about the King Charles Spaniels made famous by Charles II. He’s welcome to stand too close to those cuties.

Credit: Nils Jorgensen / ShutterstockWhat happened next: James, Duke of York (the one who took New Amsterdam from the Dutch and renamed it New York) took over from his brother as James II. His being a Catholic freaked everyone out, and when one of Charles II’s illegitimate kids (the Duke of Monmouth) launched a rebellion, James had Monmouth and 250 rebels executed, and thousands more sent to penal colonies in the West Indies. So much for amnesty.
When James and his Queen Mary had a son and heir three years into his reign, Protestant nobles freaked out some more and invited power couple William and Mary — James’ nephew and son in law plus James’ daughter — to seize the throne. James’ army dissolved and he fled to France. Parliament ruled that he’d abdicated, and in what was called the Glorious Revolution created the constitutional monarchy we know today. Power flowed through Parliament first.
James was still king in Ireland until he lost the Battle of the Boyne.
You think that’s the end of the story? Oh, you sweet summer child. It was just the beginning. The Boyne is still very much celebrated and cursed in Northern Ireland today. James wasted away in exile. His son, whom the French King and the Pope both recognized as James III of England, tried his hand at a couple of Scottish rebellions and failed. Then it was up to his son …
“Charles III” (1766-1788)
If you’re familiar with Outlander, the book series and TV show, you know something about what came next. Charles Edward Stuart or the young pretender or Bonnie Prince Charlie, as he wasn’t really known in his lifetime, traveled to Scotland and set up court on behalf of his dad, the old pretender James III. Charles marched into England with 6,000 men. Worried that wasn’t enough, he turned back, and the English finally caught up with him in 1746 at one of history’s most consequential battles: Culloden.
It was a rout. As many as 2,000 of Charles’ men were killed or wounded in one hour, versus 300 British troops. Brutal government crackdowns on highland Clans that had supported Charles began, and would not quit for decades. Charles himself, the “lad born to be King,” was disguised as a serving maid and carried “over the sea to Skye” – which is why he’s mostly remembered today in one of Scotland’s greatest earworms, the Skye Boat Song.
Exiled again to France, then Italy, Charles passed his days in a blur of drink and a miserable marriage to a German princess. When his father died, Charles styled himself Charles III, but neither the kings of France or Spain, nor the Pope, would recognize him. Nevertheless, Charles III he would be to the remnants of the Jacobite (Latin for James-ish) rebellion in Scotland and Ireland. He died in 1788, exactly 139 years to the day after his great-grandfather Charles I was executed.
Now we have an actual Charles III, who would probably prefer we forget the pretend one, not to mention the beheaded ancestor. But bearing the same name as these tragic Charleses can at least provide this comfort to the new King: by comparison, his reign has nowhere to go but up.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Despite a strong effort, Arsenal’s perfect record of victories came to an end in this, their first significant test of the new campaign. United, meanwhile, delivered yet another powerful effort that provided more evidence that their dismal performances in the first two games of the season were an aberration.
ALL EYES ON: Erik ten Hag made a bold decision by putting Antony on the field so soon after his arrival, but the Brazilian quickly paid back his confidence. The winger’s total contribution and the exquisite first goal will be enough to excite United supporters to the hilt.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner: arrest after attempted shooting of Argentina vice-president
A man has been arrested after a handgun was aimed at point-blank range at Argentina’s vice-president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in an apparent assassination attempt.
Fernández de Kirchner survived only because the pistol – which was loaded with five bullets – did not fire, President Alberto Fernández said.
The incident, in which Fernández de Kirchner was unharmed, took place as she was greeting supporters outside her home in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires at 9pm local time (0100 BST) on Thursday.
“A man pointed a firearm at her head and pulled the trigger,” the president said in a national broadcast. “Cristina is still alive because, for some reason yet to be confirmed, the gun … did not fire.”
He called it “the most serious incident since we recovered democracy” in 1983 and urged political leaders, and society at large, to repudiate the incident.

Investigators later reportedly found about 100 bullets in his home in Buenos Aires.
Thousands of Fernández’s supporters are expected to congregate in the city’s Plaza de Mayo on Friday afternoon to show their solidarity with the vice-president.
The dramatic events were captured by television cameras outside Fernández de Kirchner’s home, where supporters had been gathering for days to protest against corruption charges filed against her at court.
The footage shows a man pushing through supporters, raising a gun to Fernández de Kirchner’s face and apparently attempting a shot with the pistol, which seems to misfire. Some reports said the man pointed the gun at Fernández de Kirchner but did not fire. The two-time former president can be seen reacting, covering her face and crouching down. She was reportedly unharmed.
“When hate and violence prevail over debate, societies are destroyed and situations like these arise: attempted assassination,” he tweeted.
The former president Mauricio Macri demanded an immediate investigation into the “extremely serious” attack, “which fortunately caused no harm to the vice-president”.
“They wanted to kill [Fernández de Kirchner],” tweeted Argentina’s foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero. “This is the most serious act of political violence since the return of democracy.”
Fernández de Kirchner, a powerful and divisive figure in Argentina, is embroiled in long-running accusations that she favoured the construction firm of a close ally for road contracts in her home province of Santa Cruz during her two terms as president from 2007 to 2015.
Prosecutor Diego Luciani last week called for a 12-year sentence for Fernández de Kirchner if convicted, provoking widespread protests across Argentina, including in front of her Buenos Aires home. She responded saying the charges were politically motivated and that she is facing “a judicial-mediatic firing squad”.
Fernández de Kirchner has been widely expected to run for the Senate, and possibly the presidency, in next year’s general elections.
Reports the alleged culprit was Brazilian sent shock waves through Brazil where fears have been growing that the extremist rhetoric of its far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, may inspire some kind of violent incident.
Brazil is a month away from a presidential election in which Bolsonaro will face his bitter rival, the leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula has reportedly taken to wearing a bullet-proof vest at rallies for fear of a similar attack from right-wing extremists.
In 2018, Bolsonaro notoriously called for supporters to “machine-gun” their leftist opponents.
The former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff condemned the attack on Fernández de Kirchner – whom she called “one of our continent’s greatest leaders” – and warned of the rising dangers of political violence.
“Political hatred and fascist-type violence, encouraged by extremist politicians, are a threat to democracy in Latin America,” Rousseff tweeted.
News of the incident in Buenos Aires prompted outrage across the region and beyond.
Pope Francis phoned the vice-president from the Vatican in Rome, and also sent a telegram saying: “I pray that social harmony and respect for democratic values will prevail in beloved Argentina, against all kinds of violence and aggression.”
The Argentinian pontiff is seen as politically sympathetic to Fernández de Kirchner, who he has received at the Vatican several times.
The Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, said his country was “appalled” and called the incident “attempted murder”.
The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said Washington strongly condemned the attempted assassination. “We stand with the Argentine government and people in rejecting violence and hate,” Blinken said.
The Chilean president, Gabriel Boric Font, said the attempted assassination ought to be condemned by the entire continent.
“I send my solidarity to her, to the government, and to the Argentinian people,” he tweeted. “The path must always be that of ideas and dialogue, never that of weapons and violence.”
The sentiments were echoed by Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, who offered his support to the vice-president and all Argentinians. “Hatred and violence will never triumph over democracy,” he tweeted.
Mr. Osodeke’s comments, according to KASU spokesman Adamu Bargo, were “irresponsible, unguarded, misleading, and derogatory.”
The authorities of Kaduna State University (KASU) and Kwara State University (KWASU) have rejected ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke’s comments that some universities that have not joined the ongoing strike are “quacks” and “irrelevant.”
Mr Osodeke, a professor, made the comment during a live interview on Thursday, August 26, where he maintained that reputable institutions were involved in the industrial action called for the revitalization of the university system.
“So don’t bring up those examples.” They are irrelevant,” Mr Osodeke told interviewers, pointing out that KWASU and other institutions are not participating in the ASUU strike.
“Is there a strike at the University of Ibadan?” Is there a strike at UNN? Is there a strike at ABU? Is the BUK on strike? Is the Maiduguri University on strike? Let us discuss important universities rather than quacks.” The leader of the lecturers’ labor union retorted.
In an angry rebuttal, Adamu Bargo, a KASU spokesman, called Mr Osodeke’s remarks “irresponsible, unguarded, misleading, and derogatory.”
Mr Bargo insisted that KASU was a new-generation state-owned university founded 18 years ago on the “ethical determination” of its founding fathers to maintain higher academic standards.
“KASU is home to the world’s fourth best polymer chemist, and our lecturers have received grants both locally and internationally and are highly regarded.”
“KASU graduates are rated among the best in the world and are receiving scholarships from all over the country and the world,” Mr. Bargo said in a statement.
“KASU has ASUU members, and it is unfortunate that the union’s President calls them quacks while collecting monthly check-off fees from their salaries.”
“Doesn’t this provide good reason for every reasonable academic staff member at the University to withdraw from the Union because of this labeling and stereotyping?”
Similarly, KWASU administration took issue with the ASUU president’s remarks. According to Saeedat Aliyu, the university’s spokesperson, the institution was founded on the vision of advancing the frontiers of knowledge for the good of society and is not a quack.
“KWASU Management regards these statements as unworthy of an academic of Prof. Osodeke’s alleged status,” said a KWASU spokesperson.
Ms Aliyu described the labor leader’s remarks as “bullying, reckless, uncalled for, and a denigration of the status he occupies as national head of the Nigerian Union of Academic Staff.”
“We are the only university in Nigeria going green in her thinking and activities as proactive measures to save the environment,” the image maker said of the Malete-based institution.
KWASU is “the first institution in Nigeria to mount Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering as a forward-thinking move to develop human capacity for the nation’s aeronautic and astronautic needs,” she added.
Ms Aliyu, therefore, demanded that Mr. Osodeke retract his “abominable” statement and issue an immediate public apology to KWASU.
Most Nigerian public universities have been closed since February 24, when the national leadership of ASUU declared a strike in response to the government’s failure to implement a 2009 agreement reached with the union.
An attempt to reach an agreement fell through last week when union and government representatives failed to shift ground on their demands, particularly on payment of salaries during the strike period.

Under his Instagram profile @cobratate, the multi-millionaire has acquired 3.5 million followers, and TikTok fan accounts that post videos of Tate have racked up countless views. Clips of his appearances on various programs and podcasts that have also racked up views in the millions
Who is Andrew Tate?
According to his website, he was born in the U.S. and holds British and U.S. citizenship, has earned multiple world titles as a professional fighter, and is a commentator for an MMA promotion in Romania called Real Xtreme Fighting.
Tate apparently earned his fortune by running an adult webcam business called “myfreecams” with his brother Tristan. They employed women to have chat sessions with men in which the women would complain of personal tragedies and claim to be in need of money, which the men would then supply via a “tipping” feature on the site. The Daily Mirror interviewed the two brothers in March. Tristan said in the interview the business was a “big scam to sell sob stories to desperate men.”
Tate and his many controversies
Before his rise on Tiktok, Tate’s biggest claim to fame was being kicked off the 17th season of Big Brother in 2016 after the release of a video in which Tate appeared to beat a woman with a belt. Tate has maintained that his actions were consensual and shared a video on Facebook of a woman claiming to be the woman in the video saying that the video was, “a huge misunderstanding.”
Subsequently, many of Tate’s tweets during that time period garnered major backlash, including a tweet thread denying that depression is a mental illness. “Sure. Natural to sometimes FEEL depressed. It doesn’t make it a DISEASE. I feel hungry sometimes, then I change it,” Tate said in the now deleted thread. At the time, Tate’s take on mental health was criticized and mocked. Comedian Patton Oswalt called it an “energy drink tagline.”
Tate also claimed that women bear personal responsibility for being sexually assaulted — a comment made during the midst of the Harvey Weinstein allegations. He wrote: “Sexual harassment is disgusting and inexcusable. However. A man looking at you or whistling at you or asking your name isn’t harassment.”

As of this writing, Tate is currently under investigation by Romanian police for human trafficking, according to The Daily Beast. In a statement made to that publication, Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism said the raid on the internet star’s house was part of a probe that began after a woman was reported to have been held at the house against her will. Further, a U.S. State Department spokesperson alluded to a reported abduction of an American citizen but declined to comment further, The Daily Beast reported.
In an episode of the Tate brothers’ podcast, Tristan Tate explains that the reason for the raid was because a girl had told her boyfriend she didn’t want to be at the party but they wouldn’t let her leave.

In a statement to Bloomberg, YouTube said it first took action against Tate in July after he posted a video spreading COVID-19 misinformation. His permanent ban now is reportedly due to “multiple violations” of the platform’s community guidelines.
The termination from YouTube means that Andrew Tate will not be able to use, own, or create any other YouTube channels in the future.
“Banning Andrew Tate from these platforms might seem the answer, but it isn’t that simple. Removing Tate’s voice doesn’t allow for a kinder hate-free society,” a spokesperson representing Tate told Bloomberg.
There is a running contradiction in today’s society where men are encouraged to speak and be open/honest with how they feel but are generally met with a negative response to their truth,” they added.
Tate’s channel has been deleted on Twitch, but he’s still appearing on other people’s channels. It is unclear whether the platform has banned him. Meanwhile, TikTok has said it has banned the creator’s account but as Vice points out, Tate-related content still exists on the app.

Businessman commits suicide hours after sending an apology video to his family.
Afolabi Ogunnaike, a businessman man involved in the sale of cars has reportedly commited suicide.
Information gathered led us to know that though times had fallen on the deceased who was a car dealer before his painful demise. He was in a lot of debts and could no longer handle it which led to him taking the action to end his own life.
In the video which was reported to have been sent to the family, Afolabi was seen apologizing to his family and relatives to please forgive him and not be angry due to the actions he was about to take, stating that he could no longer bear the pressure and didn’t want to involve them in his huge accrued debts.
He ended it all by hanging from a rope which he tied to a fan in his living room.
Afolabi Ogunnaike is survived by a wife and daughter.
