    ASUU Strike: The No-Work, No-Pay Stand-off

As acrimonious as the latest soundbites from them have been, it is relieving to hear both sides of the protracted industrial dispute in the nation’s universities talking again on what should happen after the strike is called off. Before now, mum had been the word from the Minister of Education, as students of public universities vegetate at home with their future being blatantly taken from them.

The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has hitherto shown a “provocative indifference” to the industrial dispute, which started on February 14, 2022, even as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is bent on having its way.

If the history of previous strikes and their resolution is anything to go by, the current exchanges or spat between both parties is a telltale sign that the debilitating action is in its twilight, although this optimism is attenuated by the current grandstanding and subtle blackmail over the casus belli usually associated with an action that has run its course.

Reports from Tuesday’s meeting between both parties have it that members of the Professor Nimi Briggs re-negotiation Committee did not table any new offer other than pleading with the lecturers to suspend the ongoing strike, with promises that their concerns will be included in the 2023 budget.

The leadership of ASUU, who would have none of that, staged a walkout from the negotiation, which lasted about three hours.

The ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, would later follow with a statement where he disclosed that the union told the federal government through the ministry of education to return to the New Draft Agreement of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Renegotiation Committee, whose work spanned a total of five and half years as a demonstration of good faith.

He added that “the Munzali Jibril-led renegotiation committee submitted the first Draft Agreement in May 2021, but the government’s official response did not come until about one year later! Again, awards presented by the Nimi Briggs-led Team came across in a manner of take-it-or-leave-it on a sheet of paper. No serious country in the world treats their scholars this way.”

Big, Fat Liars – Presidency Knocks Those Claiming Buhari Has Destroyed Nigeria’s Economy

The presidency has declared there is no truth in the widely acclaimed position that President Muhammadu Buhari has caused more damage to Nigeria’s economy since assuming power in 2015.

The special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina made the denial in an article posted on his Facebook page on Thursday.

He claimed that inflation, stagflation, recession and depression and other economic challenges are not in any way peculiar to Nigeria nor was any economic challenge brought about by the incapabilities of the Buhari administration

Adesina argued that many other countries of the world are battling with the same issues, adding that it is a global phenomenon.

The presidential aide submitted that those playing politics with the economic situation are not sincere but only focused on amplifying negative events while ignoring the positive ones.

Buhari Govt Revokes Silverbird, AIT, Raypower, Rhythm FM, Others’ Licences

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has revoked the broadcast licences of Silverbird TV, AIT, Raypower FM, and Rhythm FM amongst others over their failure to renew broadcast licences.

this was made known by the Director General of the NBC, Mallam Balarabe Shehu.

He also directed NBC state offices to liaise with security agencies to ensure the shut down of the operation of these stations within the next 24 hours.

Shehu stated that the licenses of about 52 television and radio stations was suspended over failure to pay federal licensing charges to the tune of N2.6 billion.

According to the NBC DG, the suspended stations were warned for several months to pay licensing costs for their operations but failed to comply.

EFCC Under Magu Comprised Cases Worth N333bn, $2bn – Salami Panel

The presidential panel that probed the former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has accused him of compromising cases worth N333 billion, $2 billion and £13 million.

Student Village reports the presidential panel set up to investigate Magu revealed this in the final report submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2020.

It is understood that the final report has now been forwarded to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and a panel to produce the white paper will soon be set up.

The panel, headed by the former president of the Court of Appeal, Ayo Salami, was set up to probe the EFCC from May 2015 to May 2020.

In the final report, the judicial panel said the running and management of the anti-graft commission during Magu’s tenure was characterised by impunity and arbitrariness.

Petrol Subsidy Will End In June 2023, Says FG

The Federal Government on Thursday said it will end payments on petrol subsidy in June 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said this on Thursday during an inquiry by the House of Representatives Committee over payments of petrol subsidy by the Federal Government.

It is understood that the House of Representatives Committee is investigating petroleum products for subsidy regime from 2013 to 2022.

In her presentation, Ahmed disclosed that the subsidy regime was not sustainable and the government will end the payment of subsidy by half of next year, as contained in the 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper

The minister stated that the payment of petrol subsidy might force the government to borrow more in 2023.

I Have Joined The Obidient Movement’ – Ozigbo Dumps PDP As He Backs Labour Party’s Peter Obi For Presidency

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2021 Anambra governorship election, Valentine Ozigbo, has announced his decision to dump the party and back the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi.

Giving reasons for his decision to quit the PDP, Ozigbo told Arise TV on Thursday that at this precarious time in Nigeria’s history, a competent and visionary leader must be elected to lead Nigeria into the future.

He said Nigerians had been split into two categories: “those working to sustain the status quo and those uncomfortable with the status quo and want to bring positive change.

I belong to the group that is uncomfortable with the status quo, and we must do what we have to do save this country and set us back on the path of progress.”

In a statement earlier released to journalists, Ozigbo endorsed Peter Obi for the 2023 general election.

He described Peter Obi as a leader with the right vision for this country, the temperance, and the capacity and experience to take Nigeria out of troubled waters.

Full List Of Television, Radio Stations Affected By NBC Hammer

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has announced the revocation of the broadcast licences of some television and radio stations in the country.

In a statement on Friday, the Director General of NBC, Balarabe Shehu, said the broadcast licences of the media outlets were revoked over their failure to renew their licences.

Shehu said that the media stations were owing about N2.6 billion in debt, stating that even if they pay their fee, they would have to pay a recommencement to go back on air.

He listed some of the affected media platforms to include Silverbird TV, African Independent Television (AIT), Raypower FM, and Rhythm FM, amongst others.

Shehu directed the Commission’s state offices to liaise with security agencies to ensure the shutdown of the operations of the stations within the next 24 hours.

He, however, called on all stations who have not renewed their licences for the current duration to do so within 30 days to avoid sanctions.

Buhari Govt Awards Oil Contract To Former Militant Leader, Tompolo

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has awarded a pipeline surveillance contract to a former militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

Student Village learned that the contract signed between the government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited and Tompolo is reportedly worth over a N4billion monthly.

A source told The Nation that following the contract, the former militant leader would help monitor and oversee other surveillance contracts, contractors and their activities in the entire Niger Delta.

The Commander of the defunct Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) would also help the government end illegal bunkering, illegal refining and other forms of oil theft in the Niger Delta.

He said it was a similar role Tompolo played during the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan when Diezani Alison-Madueke was the Minister of Petroleum.

PDP Crisis: Atiku Cuts Down Delegation To Meet Wike’s Team

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly cut down to three his delegation to meet with Governor Nyesom Wike and his allies over the crisis rocking the opposition party.

Recall that the PDP plunged into crisis after Atiku overlooked Wike and picked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate for the presidential election.

The Rivers governor, who came second in the party’s presidential primary, has refused to openly back the presidential ambition of Atiku.

Some top members of the party who are unhappy with the PDP leadership have also joined Wike in calling for the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

Atiku and Wike had agreed to set up a 14-member committee to meet and iron out differences for peace to return to the opposition party.

But the committee to explore grounds for reconciliation between the two men failed to meet as scheduled on Monday.

2023: ‘Buhari Appointed As APC Presidential Campaign Council Chairman (Full List)’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed President Muhammadu Buhari as the Chairman of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.

Student Village learnt that the decision was reached during the meeting between the presidential candidate of the party, Bola Tinubu and APC Governors.

Political campaigns are expected to kick-off in September ahead of the 2023 elections.

The organogram of the campaign structure sighted by ThisDay showed that the Governor of Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong remains the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign.

Lalong, however, would be reporting to President Buhari who has been given the power to take the final decision on operations and funding of the campaign.

Tinubu would deputize President Buhari in the council, while the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu would be the Deputy Chairman (2)

Yes, you read that right! If you buy these sneakers, you’ll be walking on beer 🍺.

Drinking from shoes is an Aussie booze tradition

Heineken beer sneakers collaboration the shoe surgeon heinekicks
    Photo: Heineken

Funnily enough, shoes and beer aren’t as outlandish a pairing as you’d think. The shoey – or the act of pouring one’s drink, usually beer, into your boot before chugging it – is a well-documented tradition in Australian booze culture. Notable proponents of the shoey include Formula 1’s Daniel Ricciardo, who chugged champagne out of his boot following multiple podium finishes in 2016.

Which brings us to the next important question — how does it feel like walking on beer? According to Heineken, the soles provide the wearer with an unexpectedly smooth and unique sensation when on the go.

Only 32 pairs of Heinekicks will be made, of which seven will be made available for local sneakerheads come Q4 2022. Alternatively, you can get a look at them in the flesh from August 11 at the Limited Edt Vault at 313@Somerset.

Do you think you’ll buy the Heinekicks if you came across them?

The Eyeglasses industry makes 140 billion dollars a year “correcting” your vision

But there’s a little dirty secret they don’t want you to know…

    THREADImage

Poor eyesight isn’t just about genetics

Your environment also plays a role

Today, we spend most of our time indoors staring at our screens within the dark confines of offices

It’s taken a toll on our vision

Your eyes need to exercise in order to stay sharp and healthyImage

Good vision meant life or death for our ancestors

They needed to search the horizon for food to feed their families

Finding berries and mushrooms was also necessary

If the poor vision was purely genetic, natural selection would have wiped it out of the gene pool

    Why?

Because not correctly identifying poisonous food or mistaking a snake for a tree branch meant you died

Death = not able to pass on DNA

    Now

You’re probably wondering how this is possible

We’ve been told all our lives that poor eyesight meant glasses forever

and that your vision will get worse over time

In today’s world, there is some truth to that statement

    You can change that thoughImage

Your eyes are surrounded by muscles that move them in all directions

Like all muscles, they follow the adage:

    Use it or lose it

By not looking at far away distances and being outside in the sunlight, these structures weakenImage

Your eyes also control your diurnal rhythm (body clock)

    This clock runs on sunlight

Being stuck inside & not exposing yourself to sunlight messes up the neurotransmitter Dopamine

Dopamine is vital for eye health

It literally changes the structure of your eyeballImage

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is not being able to see things from far away

This happens because your eye elongates due to a lack of sun exposure

The light that enters misses your retina (vision processing tissue) so the image you see is blurryImage

Keeping your eyes healthy is fairly simple

    You need exposure to sunlight!

The average room is 20x less bright than being outside on a sunny day

Get as much time as you can and bask in the healing rays

    Make it your priority

Another tip is to spend time out in nature, staring at landscapes or objects in the distance

Train your eyes to stay sharp

    Give them a challenge

    You need to be proactive

Poor vision shouldn’t be a life sentenceImage

Give your eyes the environment they deserve to thrive

Spend more time outside and less time in front of screens

Eat more Vitamin A rich foods like organ meats or fatty fish

Or you’ll end up needing stronger lens prescriptions every few years

    36. If you expect results instantly, you will fail. If you give yourself 12 months and just do the right things on a consistent basis, you’ll transform your entire life
    37. If you’re not tracking calories, you’ll struggle to gain/lose weight. Use MyFitnessPal or hire a coach to make this easier
    38. Lifting with perfect form should be your focus at all times.

I used to be scrawny, depressed and had zero-confidence

PeakNG Releases Top 10 Best Schools For WAEC In Nigeria

This list doesn’t equate to these listed schools as the best in Nigeria, instead, they are selected because they have consistently ensured outstanding excellence yearly during WAEC through their students. So if you are a student and you are about to sit for WAEC, you can make inquiries into registering under any of these secondary schools.

What School Can I Register For WAEC?

    Full Article, Click here

The West African Examination Council is the examination body that regulates the assessment of senior secondary students before they finally move into the tertiary institution. This means that the understanding of the students based on what they have been taught from the beginning of senior secondary school will be tested through a series of examinations. { Schools with best WAEC results in Nigeria }.

However, a student that seems not to have a good educational background is expected to pass the examination and as such will not be able to cope with tertiary education. In line with this, some secondary schools have been constructed with the sole aim of providing a solid educational background for the students. Apart from that, the schools also prepare the students to do well in tertiary institutions. Students that attend these schools are usually more intelligent and brilliant than students that attend other schools. As being able to produce academically sound students is one of the aims of these schools, they have designed their curriculum in such a way that it covers most of the WAEC syllabus, if not all.

Schools With Best WAEC Results In Nigeria
The WAEC, based on statistics has tried to select the schools with best WAEC results in Nigeria and make them known to the public. • Run targeted campaigns.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 23-year-old man identified as Quadri Qudus who allegedly stole 21 telephones from admission seekers in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Quadri was alleged to have stolen the phones from the university admission applicants while they were writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination at a Computer-based test center in Ilorin on July 5, 2022.

Quadri who pretended as a face mask seller at the center acted to be a Good Samaritan and collected the phones from the candidates, since they were not allowed to enter the examination centre with the phone.

However, before the students could finish writing their examination papers, the suspect had disappeared from the center with the telephone sets put in his care.

Parading Quadri alongside two other suspects at the state Command headquarters of the NSCDC on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, Olasunkanmi Ayeni, said that the suspect fell into the hands of the operatives of NSCDC and was arrested in Ilorin after about one month of committing the alleged crime.

Ayeni said, “Quadri Qudus pretended to be selling facemasks at a JAMB examination centre and the student out of trust put the phones in his custody and he ran away with their phones. He was eventually caught by our men in Ilorin.”

Speaking with reporters, Quadri denied running away with the phones saying that the phones were stolen from him and he ran away out of fear of being apprehended and lynched by their owners after they might have finished writing their papers and discovered that their phones were missing.

He claimed, “The phones were actually stolen from where I kept them. I ran away out of fear of what would happen to me.

“I had to run away for my dear life before the owners came out of the examination centre because they would have beaten and lynched me if they learned that their phones have been stolen.”

Two other suspects paraded by the NSCDC included a 55-year-old security man, Arowolo Ayodeji, who allegedly had carnal knowledge of his 19-year-old daughter.

Ayeni said that the suspect was allegedly having carnal knowledge of his daughter since she was seven years old.

“Arowolo Ayodeji’s report was brought to the notice of the command through the Kwara state Ministry of Social Welfare. The ministry and the command’s Gender Unit are collaborating together. It was a good Samaritan that reported the case to the ministry of social welfare before the case was brought here,” the NSCDC spokesman said.

Ayeni said that the suspects was apprehended at Ijero Ekiti in Ijero local government area of Ekiti state and brought to Ilorin where he last committed the alleged act.

“The man was said to have been molesting the girl while she was seven years old. It means that crime has been on for 12 years running”, Ayeni said.

Ayodeji, while answering questions from newsmen, blamed his action on the work of the devil saying that the devil vicariously lured him to commit the crime.

The suspect who confirmed that he is the biological father of the teenager said that the marriage between him and the girl’s mom crashed when the girl was two years old.

Another suspect, Emmanuel Sowole, was described by Ayeni as a serial house breaker who had been arrested several times in the state.

Ayeni said, “Emmanuel has been a serial house breaker, his cases have been brought here several times and on different occasions he has been sent to remand, but he seems not to want to change from his act.

“The offence that brought him here is the breaking into a house in Ilorin and carted away some vehicle parts.”

    The world’s most powerful skill:

    Effective decision-making.

But colleges eat up 4 years of our lives and don’t even bother teaching it.

Instead, here are 10 quick lessons from psychology that will upgrade your decision-making in the next 5 minutes:

    1. Decision fatigue:

Decision-making is a mentally demanding task.

And the quality of your decisions drops as you get more tired.

Don’t make decisions when you’re tired.

    2. Survivorship bias:

We’re all wowed by the rockstar CEO that dropped out of college.

But we overlook the 99% of dropouts who go on to fail.

Our brains get distracted by shiny exceptions.

Don’t fall for exceptions when making a decision.

    3. Social proof and groupthink:

We have a tendency to blindly copy our friends and colleagues.

But sometimes copying others has disastrous effects ― like smoking to fit in with your group.

Think twice before you start imitating those near you.

    4. Confirmation bias:

We demand extraordinarily high evidence for views that do not fit our existing beliefs.

And accept extraordinarily low evidence for views that do.

Evaluate both pros and cons before making a decision.

    5. Pay attention to new information:

Our brains are quick to form strong first impressions.

This means that our brains often underestimate the importance of new information.

Stupidity often comes from overlooking crucial new information.

    Pay attention to it.

    6. Sunk cost bias:

Just because you’ve spent time or money doing something doesn’t mean you should keep doing it.

Gamblers will spend good money after bad.

People will spend years in unhappy relationships.

Learn to separate the past from the present when deciding.

    7. Don’t make decisions when you’re emotional:

We’ve all made decisions in the moment that we regret later.

Why? Because we let our emotions get the best of us in the moment.

Be patient and wait to make decisions when you’re in a calm emotional state.

    8. Leadership bias:

We often do things because someone in charge tells us to do it ― teachers, parents, bosses.

But sometimes this can have disastrous effects ― like leaders pushing their countries into unjustified wars.

    Learn to think for yourself.

    9. Dunning–Kruger Effect:

When we don’t have the required skill, our brains compensate with overconfidence.

Think of all the people who buy crypto without knowing anything about it.

Psychologists call this the Dunning–Kruger Effect.

Don’t let your confidence trick you.

    10. Liking bias:

Often times we can fool ourselves into making a decision because we like the person in front of us.

That’s why ads always feature attractive people – they know you like attractive people.

Don’t do something just because you like the person asking you to do it.

    Story source

Sometimes people make up stories about you just so you deny it, then they can put you on the defensive by repeating the accusation multiple times.

The more you deny it and defend yourself, the more they repeat it until a “scandal” starts to develop out of absolutely nothing

In journalism we call this the “Peter Fucks Goats” paradox, and this is the story of this paradox:

Peter is a normal, unspectacular, everyday guy who has a wife, 2 kids and a job in HR. He pays his taxes, goes to church and obeys the law. He does absolutely nothing wrong.

    BUT –

One day Peter’s coworker receives an email from an anonymous sender which only says the following:

    “PETER FUCKS GOATS.”

At first the coworker ignores it, but the same email comes in everyday at 10AM unfailingly. “PETER FUCKS GOATS.”

Eventually he decides its a funny prank BUT-

He shows the multiple emails to Peter, just to be sure. Peter reacts angrily and appears flustered. The colour of his face changes. He cannot understand why anyone would make up and circulate such a story about him.

Everyone else seems to find it funny, but he doesn’t.

Meanwhile the emails keep coming in, this time to all of Peter’s coworkers:

    “PETER FUCKS GOATS.”

They find it hilarious, but Peter reacts with anger and frustration each time someone references the email or his alleged goat-fucking.

He does not find it funny at all!

Eventually people stop laughing as they notice his distinct lack of amusement. The emails are now going out to Peter’s wife, in-laws and church members, with new descriptive details.

“PETER FUCKS GOATS. HE HAS SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH GOATS AT JIM’S FARM.”

    Now it’s not funny.

People start quietly wondering, “Could this actually be true? Does Peter actually do this? If he doesn’t, why would anybody make up such a story about him? With such details?”

New details are added to the emails.

“PETER STARTED FUCKING GOATS LAST YEAR. HE GAVE HIS WIFE AN STD.”

Peter’s father-in-law confronts him angrily, wanting to know if its true that Peter fucks goats and gave his daughter an STD.

Peter denies it, but his anger is starting to give way to despair. People now avoid him at work and neighbours exchange whispers about his alleged habit

Nobody wants to sit next to his family at church and his kids are mercilessly bullied at school for being the children of that goat-fucker Peter.

Eventually Peter’s boss has to lay him off because even though he knows Peter doesn’t fuck goats, his coworkers don’t.

The emails now contain graphic descriptions of how Peter supposedly fucks goats at Jim’s farm including pictures of goats and photos of Peter coming out of his house dressed for work, only to supposedly go fuck some goats instead.

“ONE OF THE GOATS PETER FUCKED DIED YESTERDAY.”

In the space of two months, Peter has gone from respected middle class family man to unemployed social pariah and presumed sexual deviant.

Peter goes home to deliver the bad news to his wife, but when he gets there, he meets an empty house. She has taken the kids and left him.

She has left a note saying that while she loves him and she knows that he did none of the things he is accused of, life has become intolerable because of how people treat them

She promises to return when things calm down, but Peter knows at this point, that this may never happen

Peter writes a suicide note apologising to his friends and family for all the pain the accusations have caused them. He maintains his innocence but says that everyone will probably be better off this way.

He hangs himself, hoping that this will clear his name.

    Another anonymous email goes out:

“PETER COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER RECEIVING TERMINAL DIAGNOSIS FROM STD AFTER REPEATEDLY FUCKING GOATS ON JIM’S FARM.”

Jim takes out an advert in the local paper stating that he runs a vegetable farm and has never had any goats.

    Nobody reads it.

Peter is buried as a pariah. His family and friends are too ashamed to even show up to the funeral.

    His headstone reads:

“HERE LIES PETER WHO FUCKED GOATS.”

The moral of the story is that certain rumours have zero downside to those who spread them, while those affected stand to lose everything simply because a completely fictitious tale is repeated continuously until it becomes accepted as fact.

    That’s how human minds work.

The solution to the “Peter Fucks Goats” conundrum is to deny oxygen and attention to such stories.

Don’t defend yourself or acknowledge it in any way. Your own angry reaction to being lied against is what will fuel the “Peter Fucks Goats” sequence.

    Resist the urge to shalaye.

One of the fake bishops apparently hired by Bola Tinubu’s campaign for the public presentation of Kashim Shettima as the vice presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has narrated how he was paid for the appearance.

The imposter, who identified himself to Peoples Gazette as Joseph Odaudu, said Mr Tinubu’s hirelings broke a mutual agreement to be paid N100,000 for the shady job.

“They came to meet us at the car park behind Eagle Square and they promised to give me N100,000. They bought food for us and took us to another place where they gave us clothes to dress like Christian leaders and reverend fathers,” Mr Odaudu told The Gazette shortly after the event in Abuja on Wednesday. “But after we finished they only gave me N40,000 and another person said they got only N30,000. I don’t know why they changed our agreement because they said they had N100,000 for us.

“I am a Christian and I am supporting Tinubu but I hate when people lie and fail to deliver on their promises,” he added.

A spokesman for Mr Tinubu’s campaign did not immediately return a request seeking comment.

The fake bishops had appeared in a cassock to give Christian voters a false impression that Mr Tinubu’s decision to pick a Muslim northerner as his running-mate for the 2023 general election meant well for the country despite strong criticism from the Christian community and opinion leaders in the country.

The Catholic Church had described those who appeared at the event held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja as “impostors,” telling The Gazette the church had no representation at the event.

When asked if he knew that it was illegal to disguise as a Catholic bishop, Mr Odaudu insisted he didn’t break any laws.

“No law was broken we only tried to show Nigerians that Christians are solidly behind Asiwaju Tinubu,” he added.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had kicked against the choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket and registered its opposition against the ruling decision of the ruling All Progressives Congress for the 2023 election.

Also, Christian leaders in the APC had repeatedly warned that the same religion ticket would spell doom for the party, following reactions and heavy criticism from Nigerians.

How to Avoid Falling For a Phishing Attack

Phishing is a decades-old social engineering attack that costs people and businesses billions each year. One small mistake can have serious consequences.

But you can take a few simple and effective steps to avoid falling for one.

This article will explain how to recognize a phishing email, how cybercriminals can leverage publicly-available information, and what technical solutions are available to help businesses prevent successful phishing attacks.

If you’d rather learn more about what phishing is, don’t worry. We can help. Read this article first: Phishing 101: What is Phishing?

Learn to recognize a phishing email

There are some hallmarks of a phishing email that you should be able to recognize.

But be careful —  none of these traits are common to every phishing email, and most of them won’t be present in more sophisticated phishing campaigns.

And remember! Phishing and spear phishing are different. If you’re looking for tips to help you spot spear phishing emails, read this article instead: What Does a Spear Phishing Email Look Like? 4 Red Flags.

    1. Branding

When you receive an email, ask yourself “Does this look right?” A good first step is to check for inauthentic or amateurish logos and email signatures.

Here’s an example: on the left is a genuine email from shipping company DHL, and on the right is a fake, taken from a 2020 phishing campaign:

In this side-by-side example, you can see a real email from DHL, and a phishing email that’s been sent to appear like it’s from DHL.

You can see that the email on the right is trying to look like DHL. It’s using DHL’s red and yellow branding, but it’s clearly a cheap imitation. If you receive an email looking like this, alarm bells should immediately start ringing.

    2. Spelling and grammar

Second, check the email for spelling and grammar mistakes. Again, while poor spelling and grammar is a good indicator that an email is inauthentic, it’s increasingly common for phishing campaigns to contain very few errors.

    Check out this example:

This image comes from a Netflix phishing scam that has been active since at least May 2018.

This fake Netflix email is a real-life example of a credential phishing attack that has been circulating since at least May 2018.

Not sure what credential phishing is? We explain everything you need to know in this article: What is Credential Phishing? How Does it Work?

Unlike the DHL email, this Netflix scam is pretty convincing, except for a couple of tiny errors that give it away. There’s an unnecessary space in the greeting (“Hello ,”) and a missing apostrophe (We re here if you need it).

These errors don’t necessarily indicate a phishing email — they might have gotten past Netflix’s quality control team — but they’re a red flag (if you notice them).

    3. Sense of urgency

Third, a phishing attack usually conveys some sense of urgency. Whether the attacker is trying to persuade you to make a payment, download a file, or click a link — they know you’re more likely to do so if you’re feeling anxious. Stressed people make bad decisions. We explore this in detail here: The Psychology of Human Error.

Here’s an example of an American Express scam that emerged in 2020:

This is example of an American Express phishing scam.

Many people will panic when receiving this and immediately click “NO.” They might even do this despite having second thoughts about the nature of the email. Of course, this is exactly what the cybercriminal wants.

    4. Inauthentic sender address

Finally, there might be some more subtle indicators that the email you’ve received is part of a phishing scam. These have to do with the sender’s email address.

A phishing email is more likely to succeed if it appears to come from an authentic email address. This type of phishing is called Business Email Compromise (BEC), and the FBI estimates that it cost businesses $1.7 billion in 2019.

Cybercriminals use three main techniques to make email addresses look authentic:

    1. Email impersonation: The email looks similar to a genuine business email address (think “b.gates@micros0ft.com” or “elonmusk@tessianmail.com”). Impersonation can be easy to spot if you’re paying attention.
    2. Email spoofing: The fraudster amends the email’s headers, so the receiving email client displays a false address. In some cases, spoofing is only noticeable if you inspect the email header information.
    3. Account takeover (ATO): The email arrives from an authentic account that has been hacked. ATO is nearly impossible for a person to detect and requires email security software.

Limit your publicly available personal information

Spear phishing is a subcategory of phishing targeting a specific person by name. Cybercriminals can find your name and email address easily — but they probably have access to a lot more of your personal information, too.

According to Tessian research90% of people post personal and professional information online. Many employees also appear in company publicity or press releases. Even out-of-office auto-replies can give away personal information.

This information is gold dust for hackers seeking to impersonate someone the target trusts. Drop in a few personal references — whether about the target or the person the cybercriminal is impersonating — and a spear phishing email becomes a lot more persuasive.

Most people are very verbose about what they share online. You can find virtually anything. Even if you can’t find it publicly, it’s easy enough to create an account to social engineer details or get behind some sort of wall – for example, you could become a ‘friend’ in their circle.”HARRY DENLEY

    Deploy email security software

If you’re an individual looking for advice, skip this section. This piece of advice is for security and business leaders.

As we’ve seen, phishing is becoming increasingly hard for humans to spot. It’s also an email-based attack 96% of the time. That’s why deploying an intelligent inbound email security solution is the key to preventing phishing.

Email security is particularly important as teams move into a remote working environment, away from the protection of CISOs and IT departments. Microsoft research shows that 80% of security professionals saw an increase in security incidents since employees started working from home.

Phishing emails almost always carry some signals that reveal they are dangerous. The more subtle phishing indicators aren’t detectable by humans — or traditional solutions like Secure Email Gateways (SEGs) and spam filters.

Singer Portable claims he founded Lagos armed robbery gang ‘One Million Boys’

In a now deleted Instagram video, the singer said in Yoruba: “Open your ears and hear me, you’ve heard about Ajah Boys, One Million Boys, I’m their founder.”

Zazuu crooner and street hip hop artiste Habeeb Okikiola, known by the stage name Portable, says he founded popular Lagos robbery gang ‘One Million Boys’.

In a since deleted video posted on his Instagram page, the singer boasted to not only have founded the popular robbery gang that terrorised citizens in and out of Lagos, but also started cult groups and another robbery gang called the ‘Ajah Boys’.

“Open your ears and hear me, you’ve heard about Ajah Boys, One Million Boys, I’m their founder,” the singer said in Yoruba.

Portable has been in the news lately, particularly for his endorsement and support of the APC’s Gboyega Oyetola in the just concluded Osun governorship election.

He was also on record saying that he was paid by the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, to campaign for Mr Oyetola.

In a response to fellow musician Davido, who unfollowed him for supporting the opposition against his uncle and Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Ademola Adeleke, Portable said he took the money to provide for his family.

“Open your ears and listen. My father isn’t a rich man, I am not a son of a rich man, I am from the trenches. I am the one that brought riches to my family. Open your ears so my words can enter.

“I am running and hustling in this manner and it is simply because of money. And also to avert the suffering my family had to endure, which doesn’t become my portion.

“Once again, my father is not a rich man. I come from the trenches but managed to bring my family into wealth. So support who supports you. They wasted no time in unfollowing us,” Portable said.

Do you know who I am?

Perfect Response To “Do You Know Who I Am?”

    STORY THREAD.

N:B it’s going to be a long read but worth it.

It happened at a New York Airport 😂 and it’s hilarious. I wish I had the guts of this girl. An award should go to the United Airlines gate agent in New York for being smart and funny, …

while making her point (when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo). For all of you out there who have had to deal with an irate customer, this one is for you.

A crowded United Airlines flight was cancelled.

A single agent was re-booking a long line of inconvenienced travelers.

Suddenly, an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket on the counter and said, “I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS.”

The agent replied, “I’m sorry, sir. I’ll be happy to try to help you, but I’ve got to help these folks first; and then I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.”

The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, …

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?”

Without hesitating, the agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. “May I have your attention, please?”, she began, her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal…

We have a passenger here at Gate 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him with his identity, please come to Gate 14″.

With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the United Airlines agent, gritted his teeth, and said, “**** You!”

Without flinching, she smiled and said, “I’m sorry sir, you’ll have to get in line for that, too.”

Life isn’t about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

    Post utme cancelled for 2018/2019
    naijaadvance.com.ng Mar 25, 2018 8:52 AM
A lot of university, Polytechnic and college of education aspirants have been asking of post utme has been cancelled for 2018/2019. There have been different news about the present status of Post-UTME and no one seems to know the actual real story.

As you all know the Nigerian Senate ones moved a motion to stop the unnecessary extortion of money from candidates all in the name of conducting post utme screening extermination, some schools even sold their Post utme forms as high as 12,000 just imagine.

With all this problems the minister of Education now steps in and explained the benefits of post utme Excercise to the school and our educational sector and a common ground was reached that all schools should peg the price of post utme form at 2,000 naira.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has urged higher institutions and the general public to disregard social media reports that he has cancelled Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME).
    Malam Adamu Adamu
A statement by the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja directed institutions to carry on with the conduct of the Post-UTME.
The statement was signed by Mrs Priscilla Ihuoma, Director, Press and Public Relations.
Ihuoma said that the minister also warned that institutions charging above the stipulated sum of N2000 for the exercise would be sanctioned.
The attention of the Minister of Education has been drawn to a news report in the media claiming that the minister had issued a directive to universities to cancel the Post-UTME examinations already scheduled.
The statement, according to the report, was issued by Mr. Ben Goong, Deputy Director of Press.
The ministry would like to assert emphatically that the report is completely false and without foundation; Minister therefore urges universities to go ahead with their Post-UTME arrangements as earlier planned.
Mr. Goong, who purportedly issued the statement, ceased to be a staff of the Ministry since November, 2016.
The attention of the minister has also been drawn to some of the institutions who are charging more than the stipulated N2, 000.’’
Ihuoma said that the minister viewed it as an act of insubordination and emphatically redirected that every institution that violated the directive would be made to face disciplinary action.
She said that the minister directed such institutions to refund to the students immediately as Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had been directed to compile list of violators for appropriate sanctions.
The ministry also urges the media to always endeavour to crosscheck facts with the relevant officials of the ministry before publication, particularly when such sensitive matters of national importance are involved.
